Overview
We are looking for two dynamic and motivated Consultants Gastroenterologist to join our friendly and enthusiastic gastroenterology team at the County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust (CDDFT). This is an opportunity to join a highly motivated gastroenterology team providing a comprehensive service of the highest quality. The service is looking to expand its sub‑specialty interests in IBD and liver disease; however, we would welcome interest from candidates with interest in any sub‑specialty areas of gastroenterology and hepatology. The Trust cannot accommodate applicants with an interest in ERCP/EUS. Successful appointees will join the existing 13 consultants (plus 2 consultant endoscopists) in delivering high‑quality inpatient and outpatient gastroenterology, hepatology, endoscopy, and clinical nutrition services across University Hospital of North Durham, Bishop Auckland Hospital and Darlington Memorial Hospital.
Responsibilities
The postholder will undertake a range of clinical, educational, and governance duties, including:
* Undertake clinical work in inpatient and outpatient settings, including general gastroenterology, hepatology, endoscopy and clinical nutrition.
* Plan and deliver a comprehensive service, maintaining and developing services and specialist skills in line with departmental needs.
* Provide care for patients in charge; support colleagues and ensure continuity of patient care, covering colleagues in absence.
* Accountable to the Clinical Lead, ensuring effective and efficient use of allocated resources.
* Serve as clinical/education supervisor for trainees, supervising and supporting junior staff.
* Participate in postgraduate teaching and training of undergraduates, junior doctors, and nurses.
* Engage in clinical audit, governance arrangements, and maintain CPD compliance.
* Contribute to or lead research projects and clinical effectiveness work.
Qualifications & Experience
* Statutory registration with GMC; full and specialist registration.
* Holder of CCT or within 6 months of attaining CCT in Gastroenterology at interview.
* Experience in gastroenterology, endoscopy and G(I)M.
* Proficient in gastroscopy and colonoscopy.
* Experience supervising, training, and teaching trainees.
* Experience with service development and clinical audit.
* Evidence of research experience and clinical effectiveness work.
* Strong clinical skills with ability to offer expert clinical opinion.
* Understanding of patient safety, audit, and improvement of clinical practice.
* Ability to solve problems and make timely decisions under pressure.
* Proficient in IT to support patient care and evidence‑based decision making.
* Higher educational qualifications: Masters, research degree, MD/PhD, teaching qualification, or Certificate of Medical Education.
* Good communication, interpersonal skills, empathy, and professional integrity.
* Willingness to carry out additional professional duties, including research, teaching, and CPD.
* Commitment to continuous professional development (CPD).
* Experience liaising with community services.
Professional Development & Funding
CPD funding of £1,100 annually covers up to 10 days of study leave, with the option to roll over to a maximum of 30 days over three years.
