Graduate Energy Engineer – Buro Happold

Join our collaborative Energy Consulting team and help design solutions that make cities and communities more resilient. From transforming infrastructure to tackling the climate emergency, you’ll play a vital role in creating a low‑carbon future.

An exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic Energy Graduate to join our Bath or London teams. This role will see you consulting on energy use in individual buildings through to national level energy strategy.

We have four Energy Consulting Graduate roles available for an Autumn 2026 start.

At Buro Happold, we believe diverse perspectives drive innovation. Our award‑winning Energy Consulting team brings together engineers, analysts, consultants, and geographers in an inclusive environment where ideas are valued and creativity thrives. You’ll receive mentorship, work on meaningful projects, and contribute to solutions that matter for society.

Projects

We are one of the few consultant energy teams that offer opportunities to work at the full scale of projects, both nationally and internationally, across four key lines of service:

* Energy Planning and Strategy – Energy planning at scale, local area energy plans, community energy schemes and master‑planning, using innovative techniques in mapping and big data. Examples: ‘Smart approach’ to decarbonising entire streets; Greater London Authority (GLA) – Subregional Local Area Energy Plans; Wimbledon Park masterplan.
* Campus and Estate energy transition – Modelling, designing campus‑scale systems (universities, hospitals, science parks, etc.) and helping clients transition to resilient net‑zero carbon solutions. Examples: Leeds University Net Zero Carbon Pathway; University of Edinburgh 2040 Zero Carbon Strategy; Port of Tyne Decarbonisation Study.
* Energy Systems Design and Delivery – District energy feasibility studies and design, re‑configuring the way we generate and capture waste heat (e.g. data centres, cooling recovery) to distribute and use energy for heating, cooling and power systems. Examples: Veolia – Southwark 2.0 Heat Network; King’s Cross Roadmap to Net Zero and Decarbonisation; Plymouth Heat Network Zoning.
* Utilities strategy, commercialisation and procurement – Providing economic and commercial modelling, advice and utility connections support.

Responsibilities

* Contribute to live projects from day one with real responsibility and support.
* Collaborate with architects, planners, and clients to deliver holistic energy strategies.
* Develop creative solutions for complex challenges – your ideas will make an impact.
* Attend client meetings and work alongside experienced colleagues.
* Undertake testing, reporting, and presentations to develop design concepts.
* Engage in team activities and knowledge‑sharing to grow professionally and personally.

Qualifications

* A degree in energy‑related engineering (mechanical, chemical, electrical, civil) or environmental science with spatial analytical skills and energy considerations.
* Passion for sustainability, engineering design, and making a positive difference.
* Thrive in a team environment.
* Strong communication skills and a collaborative mindset.
* Curiosity, initiative, and commitment to learning.
* Highly motivated and eager to contribute to team success.

We welcome applicants from all backgrounds and actively encourage applications from under‑represented groups. If you’re excited about this role but don’t meet every requirement, we’d still love to hear from you.
