Job summary We are pleased to offer this opportunity to join the General Medicine team at the University Hospital of North Midlands (UHNM). Applications are invited for the posts of Consultants in General Medicine, providing expert patient care at UHNM, serving a catchment population across Staffordshire, Leek Moorlands and North Shropshire. A full range of secondary and tertiary specialties are delivered at UHNM and we are also able to specialty sessions of your choice. We currently run two acute general medical wards at Royal Stoke (Wards 120 & 79) and one acute general medical ward at County (Ward 14), with patients admitted under the consultant team, supported by junior and middle grade staff. There will be a requirement to work a 1:3 weekend rota as well as 1:48 overnight on-call on the GIM rota. Main duties of the job Each ward has a daily board round followed by a morning consultant ward round and the consultant is currently allocated further time on wards for the afternoons to meet relatives, MDTs or review newly admitted patients in the afternoon as required. You will be expected to work with local managers and professional colleagues in the efficient running of services and will share with consultant colleagues in the medical contribution to management. Subject to the conditions of the Terms and Conditions of Service you are expected to observe the Trust's agreed policies and procedures, drawn up in consultation with the profession on clinical matters and to follow the standing orders and financial instructions of the Trust. You will be expected to make sure that there are adequate arrangements for hospital staff involved in the care of your patients to be able to contact you when necessary. All medical and dental staff employed by the Trust are expected to comply with the UHNM Trust's Health and Safety Policies. Job description Job responsibilities Provision of cover, including attendance at daily board rounds on medicine escalation ward and medical patients outlying in other areas. Take ongoing responsibility for patients under his/her care. Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with colleagues in other specialties and participate in clinical meetings and other postgraduate activities. Have responsibility for the professional supervision and development of trainee/locum doctors within escalation / medical outliers. Develop and maintain good communications with General Practitioners and appropriate external agencies. Ensure own practice is up to date. This will involve taking responsibility for own Clinical Professional Development. Share responsibility for data protection arising out of the use of computers. Comply with all relevant Trust Policies and Procedures. Take responsibility for improving and complying with infection control practices. Ensure that all Trust-wide standards are maintained to improve the quality of total care to all who come into contact with services provided by UHNM NHS Trust. Demonstrate a firm involvement in Clinical Governance, Risk Management and Clinical Audit. This will include the development and maintenance of appropriate systems and practices to ensure continued safe clinical practice. The Trust supports the requirements for continuing professional development (CPD) as laid down by the Royal College of Physicians and is committed to providing time and financial support for these activities. The Trust has the required arrangements in place for appraisal, as laid down by the RCP, to ensure that all doctors have an annual appraisal with a choice of trained appraiser and are supported when going through the revalidation process. Share responsibility for data protection arising out of the use of computers. Comply with all relevant Trust Policies and Procedures.
