Summary
We are seeking a Prescription Clerk to join our team at Queensview Medical Centre. In this role, you will play a vital part in ensuring the smooth operation of our medical practice, contributing to the overall efficiency and effectiveness of our healthcare services.
Job Purpose: The Prescription Clerk will manage and oversee the prescription process within the GP surgery. This includes handling patient prescription requests, liaising with clinical teams, ensuring compliance with medical protocols, and providing general administrative support. The role requires a strong understanding of clinical workflows, attention to detail, and excellent communication skills to work with patients, doctors, and pharmacy teams.
Key Responsibilities:
* Prescription Management:
* Process, prepare, and issue repeat prescriptions in line with practice protocols.
* Ensure all prescription requests are accurately processed and recorded.
* Work closely with the duty doctor to ensure timely and appropriate prescribing.
* Liaise with pharmacies to resolve any prescription-related issues.
* Patient Interaction:
* Handle patient inquiries related to prescriptions and medication queries.
* Assist with patient registration for repeat prescriptions and explain the process clearly.
* Address patient concerns with professionalism and empathy, ensuring that their needs are met promptly.
* Clinical and Administrative Support:
* Maintain accurate records in the practice management system (SystmOne).
* Coordinate between clinicians and patients regarding medication reviews, prescription renewals, and adjustments.
* Ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements related to prescriptions, including controlled drugs and prescribing guidelines.
* Medication Reviews:
* Assist in coordinating medication reviews for patients, especially those on long-term or repeat medications.
* Follow up on any issues or discrepancies identified in the review process and escalate as necessary.
* General Administrative Duties:
* Support with the general reception duties when necessary, including booking appointments, answering calls, and updating patient records.
* Assist in managing the prescription queue, ensuring all prescriptions are processed efficiently and on time.
* Training and Development:
* Stay up to date with changes in prescribing regulations and best practices.
* Participate in training for new staff or ongoing education on prescribing systems and practices.
Person Specification
Essential:
* Previous experience in a GP surgery.
* Strong understanding of prescription protocols and processes.
* Proficiency with clinical systems (SystmOne) and Microsoft Office.
* Excellent organisational and time-management skills.
* Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
* Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
* High attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy.
Desirable:
* Experience in managing repeat prescriptions or controlled drugs.
* Knowledge of NHS prescribing guidelines and regulations.
* Previous experience in a patient-facing role or with customer service.
* Understanding of pharmacy operations.
