Environmental Health Officer – Essex County Council (on behalf of Braintree District Council)
Temporary, full-time position on an initial 3‑month temporary basis, pay £45.00 per hour (umbrella). Location: Braintree. Closing date: 12th December 2025.
About the role
The role requires working in council offices or district during the placement, at least on several days per week. We seek an enthusiastic, self‑motivated team player to undertake the full range of duties across the district. The Housing & Pollution specialist will undertake HMO licensing, inspect properties for HHSRS compliance, carry out enforcement, respond to complaints of nuisance, rodent, filthy and verminous premises, drainage issues, and serve notices as necessary. The role will also respond to planning and licensing consultations and play an active part in delivering public health initiatives.
Principle accountabilities
* Investigate complaints and service requests in the area and function for which you are responsible.
* Ensure that all environmental matters occurring within the area are recorded and pursue action to secure compliance.
* Carry out work within a team of officers and cover absent colleagues.
* Support, contribute and comply with quality practices described within the Corporate Quality Policy and departmental plans.
* Attend and advise Area Committees to present reports on any functions for which you are responsible.
* Ensure Council and Directorate safety policies are observed.
* Apply and promote the principles of the Council’s Equal Opportunities Policy in all areas of employment and service delivery.
* Advise the Environmental Health Manager if any duties cannot be carried out.
* Be willing and able to work outside normal office hours when required.
* Support business continuity and civil emergencies as required.
* Apply and promote the Council’s Safeguarding Procedure in all areas of employment and service delivery.
The experience you will bring
* Hold a Degree or Diploma in Environmental Health.
* Registered with the Environmental Health Registration Board.
* Understand the needs of all customers in respect of the various regulated activities.
* Experience of securing regulatory compliance through various means.
* HMO licensing and HHSRS enforcement experience.
* Statutory nuisance investigation experience.
* Ability to interpret and respond to planning consultation reports (acoustic, odour, contamination, remediation).
* Experienced in complaint investigations related to vermin, filthy, and verminous premises and drainage.
