Role Overview
As Lab Manager, you will oversee the day-to-day operations of Motherlabs Oxford, supporting dynamic early and growth-stage life science businesses. You will ensure the safe and efficient running of the Motherlabs' laboratory facilities, provide technical and operational support to members, and foster a collaborative, innovative community.
You will be the key point of contact for lab members, contractors, and visitors, ensuring that ARC's facilities meet the highest standards of safety, sustainability, and customer service. Working closely with ARC's property and innovation teams, you will play a central role in supporting members as they scale their ventures.
Key Responsibilities
Safety, Facilities & Operations
* Ensure all shared laboratory equipment and facilities are maintained to a high standard.
* Lead on laboratory safety management, including chemical inventory, storage, segregation, and waste disposal.
* Review Members' Hazardous Awareness Questionaire (HAQ) to understand their processes and equipment requirements.
* Prepare, review, and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and risk assessments.
* Conduct regular safety inspections, follow up on actions, and ensure compliance with health and safety legislation.
* Manage service contracts, repairs, and preventative maintenance for the Motherlabs facility and shared lab equipment (e.g., autoclaves, -80 freezers, incubators, fume hoods, water systems).
* Act as First Aid Coordinator, out of hours (OOH) emergency responce, and Specialist Safety Officer and cover for the Motherlabs Harwell lab manager
* Oversee stock levels of consumables, gases, liquid Nitrogen, dry ice, and chemicals, ensuring efficient procurement and usage.
* Review and demostarte supplies and processes are environmentally sustainable
Membership Support & Community Building
* Provide inductions, training, and ongoing support for members using shared equipment and facilities.
* Offer technical guidance to startups, spinouts, and researchers, supporting safe working practices and project development.
* Nurture and grow the Motherlabs Oxford community, fostering collaboration and innovation among members.
* Assist with tours, VIP visits, showcase events, and demo days, representing ARC and promoting member activities.
* Support sustainability initiatives and promote member achievements across ARC's network.
Administration & Reporting
* Maintain accurate records of equipment, service logs, and safety documentation.
* Report monthly on the performance and management of Motherlabs Oxford to ARC leadership.
* Manage contractors and visitors, ensuring excellent customer experience.
* Track KPIs and contribute to continual improvement of lab operations.
* Ensure compliance with ARC policies, including Health & Safety, Equality, and Information Security.
Person Specification
* Educated to masters degree level or above in biotech/lifesciences/chemistry or related science degrees would be advantageous however not essential
* You will have NEBOSH or equivalent safety certification (Essential)
* You will be experienced in managing a lab facility, and will be familiar with and inquisitive of science processes
* Experience in risk assessment, SOP preparation, and safety compliance
* Strong understanding of laboratory processes and multidisciplinary research.
* Ability to manage and maintain laboratory equipment and analytical equipment.
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage with diverse stakeholders.
* Strong problem-solving skills and initiative.
* Excellent organisational skills, able to prioritise and work independently.
* Flexible, cooperative, and proactive attitude.
* First Aid qualified.
