BSL Teaching Assistant

We are currently recruiting on behalf of a mainstream school in Stockton-on-Tees for a BSL Teaching Assistant to provide 1:1 support for a deaf student. The ideal candidate will hold at least a Level 2 BSL qualification and have a passion for supporting students in a mainstream classroom setting. This is a fantastic opportunity to make a real difference in a student's educational journey while working within a supportive and inclusive school environment.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Provide 1:1 support to a hearing impaired student, ensuring they can fully access the curriculum and participate in classroom activities.
2. Assist in the implementation of strategies outlined in the student's EHCP (Education, Health, and Care Plan).
3. Support the student with communication needs, including using BSL to facilitate their understanding of lessons.
4. Help the student develop key skills in language, reading, writing, spelling, and mathematics.
5. Foster an inclusive environment that encourages the student's independence, confidence, and social integration.
6. Collaborate closely with the class teacher to adapt lessons and materials to meet the student's needs.
7. Monitor the student's progress and contribute to regular reviews and feedback regarding their development.
8. Assist with the preparation of learning materials and resources tailored to the student's learning style.
9. Support the student during extracurricular activities, school trips, and other out-of-classroom events.
10. Encourage positive behaviour and support the student in managing their physical and emotional needs in line with the school's Behaviour Policy.
11. Participate in professional development opportunities to enhance your skills and knowledge.
Essential Requirements:
1. Level 2 BSL (British Sign Language) qualification as a minimum.
2. Previous experience supporting students with hearing impairments, ideally in a mainstream setting.
3. A positive, patient, and proactive attitude with a commitment to inclusion and student success.
4. Strong communication and organisational skills.
5. Ability to work collaboratively with teachers, other staff members, and the student's family.
