Company Overview:

Preston Baker Planning (part of the Preston Baker group of companies) is a dynamic and innovative planning consultancy based in North Leeds. With a focus on sustainability, community engagement, and cutting-edge design, we are dedicated to shaping vibrant and liveable neighbourhoods for future generations. Working alongside in-house Architecture, land sales and land promotions teams ensures there is an abundance of potential planning projects waiting to be tackled.

Position Overview:

We have an opportunity for a motivated and talented RTPI qualified Principal Planner (or equivalent) to join our team. The successful candidate would play an integral role in supporting our planning activities across a wide geography (in all regions of Yorkshire and occasionally further afield) and would work on a range of exciting projects, primarily in the residential sector.

The role is full time and predominantly office based, with the opportunity to work from home occasionally and subject to agreement. The successful candidate would be reporting to the Director with day-to-day support from the Architecture team.

The successful candidate should have the relevant experience and an up-to-date knowledge of the planning system to enable independent working and to lead on projects.

Key Skills:

The ideal person would possess:

* Bachelor's or Master's degree in Urban Planning, or related field (RTPI accredited)
* Chartered membership of the Royal Town Planning Institute
* 5+ years professional experience in town planning, preferably with a focus on residential projects.
* A sound knowledge of planning legislation, regulations, and processes.
* A thorough understanding of permitted development and change of use legislation.
* Strong analytical, research, and problem-solving skills.
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
* An enjoyment of writing, with excellent language skills and ability to effectively communicate planning arguments. Proven ability to present arguments in person at Council meetings.
* Proficiency in using tools such as Searchland to assess site constraints plus other planning software and tools, such as AutoCAD, GIS, and planning databases.
* A proactive and adaptable attitude.
* A proven ability to multi-task, across many projects, helping to progress the team’s workload, managing projects capably.
* A willingness and enthusiasm as a team player.
* Portable contact book and a willingness to generate new business.

Key Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will work closely with the Planning and Architecture teams on a variety of residential developments, from single-family homes to multi-unit developments. Typically, your role will involve managing your own workload, undertaking planning research and enquiries, drafting reports and planning submissions (site assessments, policy notes, applications, appeals, development plan representations and so on). Assisting with the management of the team’s project instructions and its business development activities.

Specifically, this would entail

* Preparation and submission of planning applications for residential projects.
* Conducting research and analysis on planning policies, regulations, and legislative requirements.
* Preparing planning reports, assessments, and recommendations for clients and stakeholders.
* Liaise with local authorities, councils, and other relevant agencies on planning matters.
* Collaborate with architects, engineers, and other consultants to ensure compliance with planning regulations and project objectives.
* Participate in community engagement activities and public consultations as required.

Benefits:

* Competitive salary commensurate with experience.
* Holiday allowance and Pension Scheme.
* Professional development opportunities and support for further learning.
* Collaborative and inclusive work culture with opportunities for career growth.
* Exposure to a diverse range of residential projects and clients.
* Networking and opportunities to participate in social events
* Convenient office location in North Leeds.

How to Apply:

If you are enthusiastic about shaping the future of residential communities and meet the requirements outlined above, we would love to hear from you! Please submit your CV, cover letter, and portfolio (if available) to james.baker@prestonbaker.co.uk.
