Data Engineer
Summerfield House (Permanent Full Time)
NHS Grampian is an intelligence led organisation, recognised for using high quality analytics to drive decision making across the health system. Our work spans Public Health, Primary Care, Community Services, Hospitals, Partnerships, and corporate functions. We are looking for an enthusiastic, forward thinking Data Engineer to join our innovative and friendly team.
Healthcare is being transformed by new data sources and technologies. NHS Grampian is committed to maximising data as a strategic asset, powering research, improving patient care, reducing health inequalities, and strengthening population health.
We are moving to a cloud first strategy with platforms such as Microsoft Fabric, building a robust, scalable, and secure data ecosystem. This includes cloud based data lakes, SQL driven data models (including star schemas), and optimised ELT pipelines to enable trusted reporting, advanced analytics, and AI/ML.
What you will do
• Shape and deliver NHS Grampian’s cloud data architecture, covering storage, integration, processing, and analytics
• Use SQL and Python alongside modern ELT approaches to design, build, and optimise data pipelines
• Model and structure data for analysis, creating trusted solutions that support real world decision making
• Work closely with clinicians, service leaders, local authorities, and national health bodies to ensure systems meet operational and strategic needs
About you
You will be comfortable moving between high level design and hands on development. Experience with SQL, Python, cloud data platforms, and modern data engineering methods is highly desirable. An interest in AI and advanced analytics will be an advantage.
Key skills and experience
• SQL (data querying, optimisation, and modelling)
• Python (data engineering, analytics, automation)
• Data modelling (including star schemas and relational design)
• Cloud data platforms (ideally Microsoft Fabric or equivalent)
• ELT pipeline design and optimisation
• Knowledge of governance, privacy, and information security in data systems
What we offer
• Flexible and hybrid working arrangements
• Strong support for professional development and research
• Close links with the University of Aberdeen and the Aberdeen Centre for Health Data Science
