UI Design Manager - Design System
Salary: From £60,000
Last year we completed our most comprehensive rebrand in over 30 years, resulting in an increased focus on our Design System product (NEL). We’re now on a hugely exciting and ambitious journey to evolve the Design System, systematically applying the new brand, and increasing the quality and adoption of the design system to meet the needs of the organisation and all its digital products and services.
We’re looking for an experienced, talented Design Lead to join our Design System team. We need this person to provide our Design System team with the thought leadership required to systemise the Nationwide brand, equipping and enabling teams to rapidly create high-quality and accessible customer experiences that deliver on the Society’s ambition of ‘a good way to bank’.
We’re looking for someone with the ambition required to help shape the quality and future of our Design System, the resilience and pragmatism required to ensure that we deliver quickly, and the empathy required to listen and respond to customers and colleague in their needs or barriers to adopting the Design System.
The Design System team is within the Digital department within the COO function. It supports the delivery of digital products across the whole organisation. Our Design System product is used in customer and colleague facing web platforms and ever expanding to support new audiences and technologies.

This role will ideally be based out of our Swindon, Ramsbury House office 40% of the time, however, we'll consider those who can be based out of London, Northampton and Bournemouth offices with the view they will need to attend Swindon for collaboration and planning sessions 1-2 times a month.

What you’ll be doing
You’ll be joining a cross-discipline team, helping to create a Design System product and service which will enable product teams across the Society, making it faster and more efficient for teams to onboard, launch and maintain our digital products.
You’ll be the voice of design in the team, and you’ll be working with the Product Owner, Tech Lead and Accessibility Lead to shape the direction and delivery of the product roadmap.
A large part of your role will be to provide support to cross-functional product teams across Nationwide in their adoption and application of the Design System. This means you will be working with a wide group of stakeholders, helping shape the experience of Nationwide’s products and services across a variety of platforms and channels.
About you
* You’ll bring a solid understanding of Design System best practise as someone who has significant experience in using and developing a Design System product across a variety of digital products and services.
* You’ll have a detailed knowledge of visual, interface, and interaction design, with the ability to use the appropriate methods, activities, and tools to create quality, reusable system components, patterns and guidance.
* A detailed understanding of accessibility and a passion for designing accessible and inclusive experiences.
* You’ll be a natural storyteller, presenting your ideas and opinions in a thoughtful and engaging way.
* You’ll possess the ability to bring ideas to life in different ways – we like to realise ideas at speed and have a culture that supports rapid and iterative creation.
* You’ll be able to identify opportunities and think strategically across areas like; experiences creation, experience delivery, design operations, through to team culture and development.
* You’ll have the ability to share your design capabilities with those around you and be comfortable with the responsibility of developing more junior members of the team.
Ideally, you’ll also have experience working:
* In financial services, eCommerce, or within the public sector.
* On or with a:
* multi-brand Design System.
* multi-technology (web and app) system design.
