We are currently seeking an experienced Thermal Design Engineer to support the design and development of ultra-low temperature refrigeration systems. This is an exciting opportunity to join a forward-thinking engineering team working on cutting-edge technology within a regulated product environment.
You will play a key role in the full product development lifecycle, from concept through to validation and manufacturing support, using an agile approach to deliver high-performance and cost-effective refrigeration solutions.
Key Responsibilities
As a Thermal Design Engineer, your responsibilities will include:
Designing and developing ultra-low temperature refrigeration systems to meet customer and product requirements.
Applying numeric calculation and modelling methods to validate design performance while minimising reliance on prototypes and experimental testing.
Developing and reviewing system and component specifications for both prototype and production units.
Ensuring specifications are feasible and cost-effective by working closely with suppliers and manufacturing teams.
Producing and maintaining technical documentation to meet regulatory and organisational standards (including ISO 9001 and ISO 13485 ).
Supporting refrigeration testing activities, ensuring testing plans meet required quality standards.
Guiding test engineers through planning and execution, analysing results, and driving product improvements.
Contributing to the refrigeration technology roadmap by researching and developing innovative technologies and solutions.
Supporting field quality issues by providing technical expertise to identify root causes and recommend short- and long-term corrective actions.
Providing engineering support to manufacturing processes to ensure product quality and safety standards are met.
Candidate Requirements
Education & Qualifications
BSc in Mechanical Engineering (or similar).
MSc or PhD in Heat & Mass Transfer or a related discipline is highly desirable.
Technical Skills & Experience
Strong technical background in thermodynamics and heat transfer, ideally within refrigeration product development.
Proven experience in product and technology development as a design engineer.
Experience working within a structured phase-gate product development process .
Familiarity with design tools such as DFM, FMEA, and ISO 9001 design controls.
Strong experience in mathematical modelling and simplifying complex engineering phenomena while maintaining model accuracy.
Knowledge/experience with the following is desirable:
Refprop
Flownex
SolidWorks (CAD)
Agile project methodology within a regulated industry
F-Gas
Hydrocarbon conversion
