Role: Deputy Features Editor
Pay: £30,686.04 (rising to £31,186.04 following a successful 6 months probationary period)
Reports to: Features editor
Job purpose
Works as part of the features team, assisting the production and development of features content for the Morning Star and Morning Star Online and deputising for the Features Editor in their absence.
Key responsibilities
* Commissioning features content for the Morning Star
* With the features editor, helping to build and maintain contacts with contributors
* Maintain a practical knowledge of the editing, stylistic and design standards applicable to the print and electronic editions
* Assessing the political, news and stylistic content of potential articles and judging what to use in line with the paper's editorial values, policies and standards, giving feedback to contributors as appropriate
* Maintain a good knowledge of breaking and developing news both domestically and internationally and a develop a good understanding of the paper’s political priorities
* Subedit copy for articles in accordance with the newspaper's established style and to ensure published content is politically and legally sound
* Manage multiple stories at various stages of development and meet deadlines consistently
* Use relevant layout software to produce features pages within the stylistic requirements of the paper as established by the Editor and Features Editor
* Write headlines, decks, and standfirsts, and select appropriate photos for feature articles to ensure they are presented in an appropriate and appealing manner
* With the Features Editor, maintain the files and records necessary to facilitate cover during sickness or other absence with the minimum of disruption
* Attend outside events as necessary in pursuit of stories and contacts
* Under the guidance of the features editor, play a role in co-ordinating special projects that may arise on the features desk
* Participate in developing new strands and types of features content under the guidance of the Features Editor
* Work with other members of both the business and editorial departments as required to identify new commercial and promotional opportunities related to content
