About the Role
We are looking for a Freelance Section Engineer to join a major highway project in Gloucester. This role will focus on delivering critical earthworks and drainage packages, supporting the successful delivery of a nationally significant scheme.
The position is offered on a freelance contract basis (inside IR35), ideal for an experienced engineer with a background in major highways or infrastructure projects.
Key Responsibilities
Manage and oversee site works within your section, particularly earthworks and drainage.
Carry out setting out, surveying, and quality checks to ensure works meet project specifications.
Support the project team with planning, sequencing, and coordination of works.
Supervise subcontractors and direct labour, ensuring works are completed safely and efficiently.
Produce and maintain accurate records: ITPs, QA documentation, site diaries, and progress reports.
Enforce site health, safety, and environmental standards.
Liaise with designers, stakeholders, and the wider delivery team to resolve technical queries.
Requirements
Degree or HNC/HND in Civil Engineering (or equivalent).
Demonstrable experience as a Section Engineer on major highway projects.
Strong knowledge of earthworks, drainage, and highway infrastructure construction.
Proficient in setting out and using surveying equipment (Leica/Trimble).
Good working knowledge of AutoCAD and MS Office.
Excellent communication and organisational skills.
CSCS card required; SSSTS/SMSTS advantageous.
