Overview

Are you looking to progress your career? An exciting opportunity has arisen for a fixed term junior sister posting to join our friendly and energetic team on Kennaway ward. Kennaway ward is a 11-bed inpatient adult ward caring for cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, radiotherapy, surgery, and symptom control as part of their cancer journey. We also have a 3 bedded surgical day unit which runs 5 days a week offering day case surgery.


Responsibilities

* Assist the ward manager of Kennaway Ward in creating and maintaining a safe, therapeutic clinical environment for all patients and their families who come to the area.
* Assist the ward manager in managing resources within the clinical area in a cost effective way. This includes maintaining and monitoring equipment and being proactive in managing staff rosters to minimise the use of temporary staffing.
* Assist in providing strong proactive clinical leadership of the nursing and support workers that is motivating, supportive and sets clear boundaries resulting in high quality safe patient care. The post-holder will deputise for the ward manager and co-ordinate the nursing teams by liaising with the senior staff nurses and clerical staff to ensure continuity of care for patients and on-going managerial support for staff.
* Work with the ward manager to provide a clinical learning environment that enables nursing staff to develop professionally and promotes the use of evidence in practice.


Qualifications & Expectations

* Demonstrate excellent interpersonal and clinical skills and enjoy working as part of a team.
* Act as a role model for junior members of the team, ensuring care is delivered to a high standard in line with the values of the trust, and support them in their own professional development.
* Assume managerial responsibilities for coordination of shifts, supporting the Ward Sister with the management of staff, auditing, incident reporting and be actively involved in recruitment and developing skills as a leader within the Trust.
* Maintain a proactive approach to patient focused multidisciplinary care, understanding the physiological, psycho-social, spiritual and cultural needs of patients with cancer and their families.
* Provide empathetic support when involved in the process of giving patients and/or relatives bad news, acting as a role model for staff to ensure patients are treated sensitively.
* Ensure good communication with other departments to maximise continuity of care and ensure appropriate information and support for patients following their visit to the unit.
* Assess the educational and informational needs of patients and carers on Kennaway Ward and produce and use appropriate materials to ensure optimum understanding of treatment and care.
