Main duties of the job
Under the supervision of Senior Biomedical Scientists, the post holder will contribute to the delivery of a high-quality clinical technical service within the Blood Sciences Laboratory.
This role forms part of the specialist Biomedical Scientist team responsible for providing a 24/7 diagnostic service across the multi-disciplinary Blood Sciences department. As a Specialist Biomedical Scientist, the post holder will undertake delegated responsibilities essential to maintaining a fit-for-purpose medical laboratory service. This includes supporting efficient patient care and effective resource management.
The post holder will play a key role in delivering a comprehensive and appropriate diagnostic service to users. This involves performing a range of procedures such as preparation, maintenance, operation, and quality assurance of Blood Transfusion Laboratory analysers.
The successful candidate will assist in the day-to-day operations of the Blood Transfusion Laboratory, Haematology and Coagulation including data collection, entry, and analysis. They will support Biomedical Scientist staff by aiding in automated blood sample analysis, data processing, and blood stock management. This is a varied and engaging role within a supportive and dynamic working environment.

Ensure fridge/freezer temperatures are monitored.
Prepare all reagents in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
Effective stock management. Completing Vanessa Blood Stock management data. Dealing with all deliveries both NHSBT and non-NHSBT.
Prepare and pack samples dispatched to other laboratories, stocking up satellite blood fridges.
Perform all work in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Health and Safety Regulations
Perform under the guidance of qualified Biomedical Scientists automated processing of samples as well as analyser maintenance.

Laboratory Equipment and Systems
The department is equipped with two Bio-Rad IH-1000 analysers and one IH-500. Routine haematology laboratories are fully automated, utilising the Sysmex XN-9100 track with XN-series, Extended IPU, and Epic Beaker LIMS.

A large part of this modernisation will involve moving 70% of our services to a purpose built, state of the art Hub laboratory in the heart of London.
