Job title: Principal Control & Instrumentation Engineer
Location: Barrow-in-Furness, Filton or Manchester (minimum 2 days on-site per fortnight). We offer hybrid and flexible working arrangements—please discuss options with your recruiter.
What you’ll be doing:
* Develop a functional design for the Vehicle Control solution for SSNA.
* Coordinate with stakeholders to oversee the delivery of the vehicle control solution and strategy.
* Support assurance activities in collaboration with the Office of the Chief Engineer.
* Work with the engineering manager to deliver the vehicle control system, reporting progress via agile tools.
* Ensure timely delivery of the engineering plan.
* Guide and instruct on engineering methods and processes.
* Develop technical solutions with the Engineering Delivery Team, nurturing team members.
* Engage with legacy stakeholders to develop solutions based on existing designs.
Your skills and experiences:
* Experience in designing large-scale C&I systems, meeting various standards.
* Managing non-functional requirements like EMC and shock compliance.
* Authoring/reviewing design documents such as I/O schedules and interface control documents.
* Degree or equivalent in Engineering, Physics, Maths, or Science.
* Understanding of control system architectures and communication protocols (e.g., RS-485, PROFIBUS).
* Experience with IEC 61508 or similar functional safety standards.
* Experience with maneuvering systems across industries.

Contribute to defining and designing the Royal Navy’s next-generation attack submarines, combining legacy tech with new control concepts, collaborating with stakeholders, suppliers, and the Royal Navy. Relocation support is available for eligible roles.
