Job overview

We are seeking a highly motivated Cardiac Physiologist to work autonomously as Lead Cardiac Physiologist in Cardiac Rhythm Management (CRM) and Invasive Cardiology. To lead the CRM/Lab area of Cardiac Physiology services, ensuring provision of research based patient care, effective and efficient management of resources and staff development and education in the Luton and Dunstable Hospital.

You will play a key management and leadership role, contributing to the continuous development of our vibrant and growing cardiology service. The Cardiology Service offers a comprehensive range of invasive and non-invasive cardiac procedures including Daytime Primary PCI, Elective PCI (with tools like Shockwave, IVUS, IFR, FFR), Brady Pacemaker implantation and follow-up, Cardioversion, Exercise Treadmill Testing, Tilt Testing, and ambulatory monitoring (Holter monitors, BP monitors and Loop recorder monitors). Our Cardiac Centre has 2 cathlabs, one of which is brand new.

You will be responsible for the effective operation and business management of invasive cardiac physiology services, in collaboration with the Lead Physiologist for Cardiac Services, Principal Cardiac Physiologist, Pacing Lead Consultant, Cardiology General Manager, Clinical Director and other team leads. This will include operational issues such as workforce management, activity management, equipment management and the delivery of key clinical quality and performance standards.

Main duties of the job

Work alongside the Principal Cardiac Physiologist, the Cardiology Clinical Director and the Cardiology General Manager to support the strategic direction of the Trust, actively supporting improvement plans and attainment of key targets.

To exercise own initiative and judgement in solving problems and making decisions that affect own area of clinical work and that of junior colleagues, whilst keeping others informed and recognising when there is a need to refer problems for medical opinion.

To contribute positively to the leadership of the Invasive Cardiac Physiology team and the smooth running of the department.

To efficiently manage the CathLab/CRM Cardiac Physiologists staff rota in order to ensure activity levels are maximized.

To identify opportunities for improvements to the invasive services and manage change in collaboration with others across the trust and network.

To manage and maintain the service offered to the MRI departments within the Trust to ensure timely and open access to MRI imaging for patients with CIEDs

To coordinate servicing and maintenance of CRM equipment directly with suppliers and through the Clinical Engineering department

To manage and maintain the department’s remote/home monitoring service to ensure a rapid and high standard of follow-up. To lead on the further development of this service in line with national guidelines.

To actively line manage the team to include recruitment and retention of staff

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria

1. BSc Hons Clinical Physiology or equivalent i.e. BTEC in Physiological Measurement, NVQ 3 - technical Cardiology
2. British Heart Rhythm Society (BHRS) accreditation or European Heart Rhythm Association (EHRA) accreditation or International Board of Heart Rhythm Examiners (IBHRE) accreditation
3. Evidence of continuing professional development

Desirable criteria

4. Management course(s)

Experience

Essential criteria

5. Experience managing the invasive cardiac physiology rota
6. Experience with performing quality audits
7. Experience developing protocols and guidelines

Knowledge

8. Specialised knowledge in Pacing

Applicant requirements

The postholder will have access to vulnerable people in the course of their normal duties and as such this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.
