The Electrical Design Engineer will drive electrical design, oversee installation and commissioning of electrical solutions and life safety systems, and work with other engineering disciplines as needed. The role is primarily site-based and requires flexibility to meet project and customer needs, while ensuring compliance with technical standards, safety regulations, and operational specifications focused on energy efficiency and minimizing downtime.
You may conduct electrical surveys to determine technical requirements for various business requisitions within the VIRTUS Demand Process and prepare Scope of Works (SOW) documents to support tendering and project delivery. Regular coordination with contractors, vendors, and internal teams will support successful project execution within timeframes and budgets. The role also includes periodic electrical configuration audits in the data centre environment to ensure alignment with operational standards and to identify potential improvements.
Responsibilities include engaging with stakeholders and reviewing changes within VIRTUS Change Management, assessing risk and impact to determine the correct procedures in line with industry best practice, VIRTUS Standards and Health and Safety expectations. This role works closely with Project Management, MEP design and construction teams to deliver electrical systems that meet client operational and business requirements.
Key requirements include experience in mission critical facilities, understanding of hv and lv electrical systems, and familiarity with electrical control systems and life safety technologies. The successful candidate should be able to work in a fast-paced environment and adapt to project-driven demands.
Key Responsibilities
* Design Leadership: Lead the design of electrical systems for data centres, including power distribution, UPS, generators, lighting, earthing, and fire alarm systems, ensuring cost-effective, compliant designs.
* Collaboration: Work with clients, contractors, consultants, and internal teams to deliver integrated electrical systems for data centre projects.
* Quality Assurance: Ensure designs meet industry standards, building regulations, and client specifications, and supervise development of drawings, specifications, and calculations.
* Technical Leadership: Provide guidance for design, installation, and commissioning of electrical systems; perform electrical calculations, simulations, and load assessments.
* Project Management: Support project planning, scheduling, and budget management to ensure timely delivery of electrical designs.
Qualifications
* City and Guilds, NVQ or equivalent in an Electrical discipline
* Building Services or Electrical Engineering degree or higher (HNC/HND)
Experience
* Technical understanding of HV and LV electrical systems and their primary components
* Proficient knowledge of electrical principles and advanced concepts
* Experience in operations, maintenance, engineering, construction, and delivery of mission critical facilities
* Ability to produce Energy Analysis reviews from operational performance data
* Ability to analyze problems affecting critical operations and propose solutions, sometimes with limited information
* Experience in data centre environments or related sectors; hyperscale operators, lease providers, or heavy process industries (power/cooling) is desirable
* Experience in mission critical environments (e.g., Hospitals, Finance, Data Centres)
* ASHRAE electrical/commissioning understanding
* Familiarity with Fire Detection and Fire Suppression systems, and BMS/PMS (Trend, Citect Scada, Schneider PMO, StructureWare)
* Knowledge of electrical control systems (Zelio logic, PLCs)
* Electrical/Mechanical/Controls and Fire & Life Safety conceptual design
