Consultant in Medicine of the Elderly and General Medicine

Applicants must have full GMC Registration, a license to practise and eligible for inclusion in the GMC Specialist Register. Those trained in the UK should have evidence of higher specialist training leading to CCT or be within 6 months of confirmed entry from the date of interview. Portfolio Pathway (formerly known as CESR - Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration) route doctors are only eligible to apply for a substantive consultant post once it has been awarded. Non-UK applicants must demonstrate equivalent training.

Applications are welcome for the above Permanent, full time (40 hours per week) post based in the Western General Hospital.

This post is based in the Departments of Medicine of the Elderly & Stroke, and Acute Medicine, at the Western General Hospital, Edinburgh.

Both departments encompass dynamic and innovative teams of consultants committed to improving the care of frailer older patients that present to hospital.

The job is for a consultant post working in the Medicine of the Elderly & Stroke Medicine department with a sessional commitment to Acute Medicine. The post is for 10PAs, of which 2PA will be for a commitment to Acute Medicine, 1 PA a commitment to the Medicine of the Elderly out of hours rota, and 1PA dedicated to Medical Education.

Clinical duties will include:

1. The acute assessment and early management of older patients with markers of frailty presenting to front door medical assessment areas
2. MAU activity – weekday activity – 6 - 7 mid week blocks (Monday to Wednesday, or Wednesday to Friday) annualised
3. SDEC activity –annualised activity (16 x 0830 – 1400 and 16 x 1400 – 1900 shifts or 16 x 0830 – 1900 shifts)
4. Assessment and Rehabilitation of Older Adults via admission avoidance or enhanced supported discharge pathways (ARC)
5. Continued development of the hospital wide acute frailty pathways
6. Commitment to the Medicine of the Elderly on call rotas (1:11 weekdays / weekends)
