Job Purpose
To provide high-quality, customer-focused legal advice across the Council, proactive and responsive to its needs. To offer legal services in areas such as Planning, Commercial, Procurement and Contracts, Governance, Licensing, and Information Law. To support the Assistant Director (Legal and Democratic Services) in implementing the Council’s vision and values.
Key Responsibilities
* Contribute to achieving the Council’s objectives.
* Manage a caseload including drafting legal documents, negotiating agreements, and managing court proceedings.
* Prepare and process legal proceedings and represent the Council in court, arbitration, or inquiries.
* Advise and provide legal services to Council Committees and Panels.
* Lead on strategically important legal work within the team.
* Prepare reports and present recommendations to Committees.
* Research legislation and assist with legislative implementation.
* Provide pragmatic, legally compliant advice across local government work.
* Perform other duties as assigned, including legal training and development.
The Experience You Will Bring
* Qualified solicitor or barrister with at least 2 years PQE.
* Knowledge of local government policies and processes.
* Ability to work under pressure and adapt to changing needs.
* Good knowledge of relevant legislation and decision-making procedures.
* Strong analytical, communication, and interpersonal skills.
* Ability to give clear advice and influence stakeholders.
* Understanding of the political context of local government.
* Initiative, ability to work independently and as part of a team, and to escalate high-risk issues.
