Due to our continued growth we are now recruiting for a Mechanical Design Engineer – HV Battery to be based at our customers site in Gaydon.

Our Engineering Research and Development department (ER&D) is a fast-growing function within Tata Technologies Limited that is assembled to work on exciting projects globally for multiple customers. It comprises highly specialized engineers across Automotive, Aerospace and Industrial Heavy Machinery.

The Role:

We are seeking a skilled Inverter Mechanical Design Engineer to be responsible for designing and developing mechanical assemblies and components within the HV battery.

Key Responsibilities:

·Generate 3D concept design generation of HV battery pack in alignment with HV systems hardware

·Design and develop ePowertrain components from blank sheet designs through to prototype and production manufacture, ensuring key functional attributes such as:

-Weight

-Package for Sub-system, System and Vehicle

-Cost

-Quality

-DfM, DfA

·Define & manage the commodity deliverables for each component owned including:

-Delivery timing including design, manufacturing and testing lead times

-DFMEA, PFMEA

-DV and PV Plan

-Supplier sourcing options and supplier management

·Contribute to wider sub-system and system DFMEAs and PFMEAs.

·Capture and author design standards and best practices unique to designs and applications

·Support delivery of ePowertrain systems and commodities strategy

·Present status at Gateways and support ePowertrain design reviews, Package Meetings & ePowertrain meetings.

·Work cross-functionally with other R&D departments to define and balancing characteristics to achieve system and vehicle requirements

·Support all Virtual Verification activities, including packaging, 1D & 3D analyses

·Coordinate system and supplier comparison studies and evaluate RFQ responses to influence management decisions

·Complete Change Tracking Documents, Engineering Release Notices & Releases to allow engineering changes to be approved by the business

·Resolve engineering Concerns (using eCMS) in a timely fashion

·Support Intellectual Property (IP) team to protect company generated IP

·Acquire and evaluate competitor benchmark information to influence concept creation in early project phases

Stakeholder relationships:

Internally, the key relationships will be with: ePowertrain team; Electrical team; ePowertrain Management; Chief Vehicle Engineers; Program Management; Purchasing; Quality; Advanced Manufacturing Engineering; Vehicle Concept team; Legislation & Certification; Prototype and Build;

Externally, the key relationships will be with: Component suppliers; Engineering partners (simulation, design, testing, validation); Testing facilities; Manufacturing plants; Vehicle proving grounds

Problem solving & accountability:

The Design Engineer will be expected to perform their role with limited guidance and supervision. However, regular communication with Manager will be maintained. As technology develops, it is expected that the Design Engineer will keep the business up to date with the latest external developments in the ePowertrain space

Constraints:

The Mechanical Design Engineer will be required to comply with all policies and procedures issued by and on behalf of the business. The Design Engineer needs to be aware of all relevant certification, legislation and market regulations for ePowertrain components, and ensure compliance with all company and Global Engineering standards.

Additional requirements:

Ability to travel to engineering partners and suppliers (UK and worldwide) on a regular basis to advance product development is essential. Driving license and medical clearance to use high speed tracks and hot and cold environmental chambers if required to support development activities.

Essential experience:

·HV battery design experience

·Mechanical design of powertrain components experience (more than 5 years)

·Excellent user of CAD (NX preferred) to design ePowertrain components including but not limited to: HV Battery components (Housings, base plates, bus bars, modules), EDU components (Housings, gears, shafts)

·Skills in design processes such as: casting, sheet metal, injection moulding, extrusions, stamping, composites

·Excellent GD&T abilities in both generation, critique and tolerance stack analysis

·Good knowledge of DfM, DfA, DfC

·Good experience of managing suppliers

·Hands on experience of working with automotive High Voltage ePowertrain systems

·Experience of delivering ePowertrain commodities from early R&D to series production through an automotive product creation system

Preferred experience:

·Mechanical systems development and integration for high performance hybrid and/or electric vehicles to ISO 26262

·Knowledge of relevant component legislation and certification requirements for automotive ePowertrain systems

·Understanding of hybrid and electric powertrain system functionalities and attributes at vehicle, system and component levels

·Driving product developments issues to resolution.

·Use of test equipment to support mechanical system testing

Required skills and behaviors:

·Strong teamwork skills, self-motivated, eager to take responsibility and deliver results with minimal supervision

·Demonstrated experience in cross-functional teams

·Excellent written and verbal communication skills

·Ability to organise multiple inputs into succinct summary

·Accomplished writer of technical and project status reports

·Fluent presenter of technical information at all levels including to senior director level internally and in external companies

·Ability to challenge experts, consultants and seniors by presenting measured opinion

·Passion for the advancement of hybrid and electric powertrain and vehicle technology
