Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity to join the newly formed Group Financial Improvement Team the first finance function to complete its corporate services transformation and now operating as a single, unified service across the Group. Bringing together the strengths of UHBW and NBT, the team combines finance, programme management and improvement expertise to drive better services, better processes and better value for patients and staff. This is not traditional CIP or simple cost reduction; it is about making things work better.

As a Senior Finance Manager within the Financial Improvement function, you will play a central role in driving the Trust's Financial Improvement Programme and ongoing Savings Programme. You will lead the development, analysis and reporting of financial performance to PFIG and the Financial Sustainability Board, ensuring robust benefits tracking and supporting the creation of future-year savings schemes. Using benchmarking and other analytical tools, you will identify opportunities to enhance both clinical and non‑clinical service delivery and financial performance. You will provide high‑quality financial advice to clinicians and managers, shape and evaluate transformation schemes, and take ownership for progressing delivery across Divisional and Corporate areas. Working closely with the Head of Financial Sustainability, you will help embed a culture of continuous improvement and strengthen financial sustainability across the Trust.

Main duties of the job

  1. Lead the development, analysis and reporting of financial performance for the Trust's Financial Improvement and Savings Programmes.
  2. Produce high‑quality financial insight for PFIG, the Financial Sustainability Board and senior stakeholders, ensuring accuracy, clarity and timely reporting.
  3. Develop, maintain and improve benefits tracking models to support robust monitoring of savings schemes and future‑year opportunities.
  4. Use benchmarking, service line reporting and analytical tools to identify opportunities to improve service delivery, efficiency and financial performance.
  5. Provide expert financial advice to clinical and operational leaders, supporting the design, evaluation and delivery of transformation and efficiency schemes.
  6. Take ownership of financial improvement delivery within specific Divisional and Corporate areas, ensuring progress is monitored and issues are addressed proactively.
  7. Support the development and embedding of financial policies, controls and practices that strengthen financial sustainability across the Trust.
  8. Work closely with the Head of Financial Sustainability and Finance Business Partner to provide professional financial support across the organisation.
  9. Build strong relationships with clinical, operational and corporate teams to support collaborative working and successful delivery of improvement initiatives.
  10. Contribute to a culture of continuous improvement, promoting innovation, financial discipline and evidence‑based decision‑making.
  11. Ensure accurate production of monthly reports to the Productivity and Financial Improvement Group (PFIG) and Financial Sustainability Board (FSB); liaise with divisional and corporate staff, reconcile reports, avoid duplication of savings and prepare additional reports as required.
  12. Develop and maintain financial benefits tracking models for Savings / Transformation work streams in collaboration with Corporate Directors, Divisional Financial Managers, Divisional Directors, Trust work‑stream leads and NHS supplies, pharmacy, transformation project leads.
  13. Lead and manage the financial aspects of programmes and projects for specific Transformation / Savings schemes; provide expert financial advice, develop robust financial models, track benefits, present complex financial information to non‑finance managers.
  14. Produce ad‑hoc reports and analysis in support of Savings / Transformation delivery as required by the Head of Financial Sustainability.
  15. Provide financial support to existing work‑stream groups as needed.
  16. Work with corporate executives and divisional managers to support the Trust in developing new savings and efficiency opportunities.
  17. Research and recommend best practice for savings and transformation change from other organisations.
  18. Ensure trust and divisional managers are trained in reporting requirements for the Savings Programme.
  19. Provide technical financial support and advice to clinicians and managers on the development and evaluation of savings / transformation schemes.
  20. Carry out investment appraisal of proposals using advanced financial management skills.
  21. Conduct benchmarking reviews with similar organisations to identify potential scope for improvement of service delivery and financial performance.
  22. Study and report on the efficient or optimal use of facilities and resources within the Trust, using Service Line Reporting data.
  23. Offer consultancy support to Divisions or work‑streams needing high‑level financial expertise.
  24. Provide professional financial support for business case production, achievement of targets, risk assessment, capacity planning and resource allocation.
  25. Drive the timely completion and sign‑off of detailed delivery plans and Quality Equality Impact Assessments for CIP schemes.
  26. Introduce, adapt and improve financial systems used in the Financial Improvement team.
  27. Deputise for Finance Business Partner as required.

Person Specification

Knowledge and Experience

  • Experience in the resolution of complex financial queries
  • Experience of working on major financial projects involving changes in service provision without supervision
  • Experience of holding meetings with senior managers and other non‑finance staff and leading on discussions involving complex financial issues
  • Experience of working to deadlines
  • High level of knowledge of financial management accounting techniques

Skills and Abilities

  • The ability to interpret and analyse complex financial information
  • Prepares plans for projects which impact across the Trust
  • Ability to advise managers on certain courses of action using specialist knowledge of financial procedures and NHS / Trust policies
  • Ability to contribute to meetings with senior managers
  • The ability to cope with frequent change and with conflicting demands
  • Proven ability to be organised

Qualifications and Training

  • Evidence of a high standard of numeracy and literacy
  • Fully qualified Accountant
