Overview

Location: Ayr, Barnsley, Basingstoke, Bexleyheath, Birmingham, Bury St Edmunds, Chadderton, Chichester, Coventry, Derby, Dumfries, Featherstone, Glasgow, Hayes, Lee‑on‑the‑Solent, Leicester, Livingston, Norwich, Portsmouth, Potters Bar, Reading, Redditch, Sheffield, Southampton, Wednesbury, Wetherby, Winchester, Worthing. You have just contributed to ensuring that Britain's roads are one of the safest in Europe. As a DVSA Vehicle Examiner – MOT Specialist you review compliance at MOT garages, assess faulty equipment, and advise owners on the consequences of continued use of defective gear.


Responsibilities

* Visited an MOT testing station and re‑inspected a recently tested vehicle.
* Carried out an audit at an MOT testing station to ensure it was operating correctly.
* Performed a statutory MOT appeal test following a complaint on the standards of the MOT.
* Qualified a new MOT tester following a successful demonstration test.
* Investigated the issue of fraudulent MOT test certificates.
* Traveled to MOT testing stations to check compliance and give advice to people in all MOT roles.
* Analyzed data for MOT garages, carried out off‑site reviews and planned work actions, including mystery‑shopper investigations.
* Wrote in‑depth reports and, where necessary, issued temporary suspension notices or advisory warning letters.
* Answered technical queries from customers, offering advice, guidance and education as required.
* Followed operating instructions and procedures.
* Presented evidence on behalf of DVSA in court.
* Completed an 18‑week full‑time training course, usually held at DVSA training centres in Bristol or Manchester.


Qualifications

Required qualifications:

* Vocational qualification in motor vehicle maintenance & repair at level 3, or IMI ATA registration at diagnostic technician level, or IRTEC registration at advanced technician level.
* Full and current car driving licence.
* Credible witness status for court proceedings (no convictions or material doubts about reliability).

Technical skills:

* Knowledge of vehicles as per the DVSA Technical Competency Framework.
* Experience in the repair, maintenance or inspection of at least one type of vehicle, with relevant qualifications.
* Ability to diagnose and assess vehicle components for serviceability.

* Resilience – ability to handle difficult conversations and actions that may affect income or prosecutorial decisions.
* Teamwork – coordinate work with team members.
* Communication – clear, calm, and effective in giving advice and education.
