Principal FOI Officer

The role:
We're looking for a skilled Principal FOI Officer to lead the Council's approach to Freedom of Information (FOI), Environmental Information Regulations (EIR) and our interface with the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO).
You'll be the organisation's subject-matter expert assuring the quality of responses, coaching services, spotting trends, and driving performance improvements that keep us compliant and responsive
What you'll do
* Own the FOI/ICO relationship: oversee internal reviews, coordinate investigations, and represent the Council in regulator engagement.
* Assure quality: review and sign off draft responses; provide robust advice on FOI, EIR and the Data Protection Act.
* Champion transparency: lead actions to align with the Local Government Transparency Code and oversee internal/external audits and follow-up.
* Collaborate widely: work across Legal, Governance, Digital, Data Protection and frontline services to ensure a coordinated information management approach.
You bring:
* Proven experience handling FOIs, EIRs and ICO complaints, including internal reviews.
* Excellent stakeholder skills and confidence working across multiple service areas (e.g. Adults, Children's, Housing, Regeneration, Customer Services).
* High standards of customer service and clear, professional spoken English when advising the public and colleagues.
