Birchwood School is entering a new phase of development, and we are pleased to offer a 12‑month fixed‑term opportunity for a Teacher to join our dedicated team in Cardiff. This maternity cover role is ideal for someone who wants to make a meaningful impact within a specialist setting while contributing to the continued expansion of our provision.

About the Role
As a Teacher at Birchwood School, you will deliver engaging, personalised learning experiences tailored to each pupil’s individual needs. You will work collaboratively with therapists, care staff, families and a skilled team of Learning Support Assistants to create a positive, inclusive and structured learning environment.
A key part of this role includes managing, coaching and developing a team of Learning Support Assistants, ensuring they are confident, supported and effective in their practice.
Your responsibilities will include:
1. Planning and delivering differentiated lessons aligned to individual learning needs
2. Creating a calm, structured and supportive classroom environment
3. Using positive behaviour support strategies in line with school policies
4. Monitoring, assessing and recording pupil progress
5. Working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams and parents/carers
6. Supporting pupils’ wellbeing, including personal care where required
7. Leading, coaching and supporting Learning Support Assistants to ensure high‑quality classroom practice
8. Promoting safeguarding, equality and inclusion at all times
What We’re Looking For
Essential:
9. GCSEs (A*–C or equivalent), including English and Maths
10. A child‑centred approach and passion for inclusive education
11. Strong classroom management and communication skills
12. Ability to adapt teaching methods to support complex needs
13. Commitment to safeguarding and pupil wellbeing
14. Experience supporting or leading others in a classroom environment
Desirable:
15. Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
16. Experience working with pupils with Autism, SEMH or additional learning needs
17. Confidence working within a multidisciplinary team
18. A creative, flexible and reflective approach to teaching and learning
19. Experience coaching or mentoring support staff
