Please note that this vacancy may be withdrawn at any time should it be filled via the internal redeployment process Job Overview We are looking for a highly motivated Registered Nurse / Practitioner to join our versatile Day Surgery Unit team. The unit is a 5-day service with plans of development within the surgical services. The successful applicant will need to be committed to the educational needs of the department and be expected to promote the high standards of patient care provided by Aneurin Bevan University Hospital. The Day Surgery Unit (DSU) is a busy unit currently running 5 Theatres, specialising in a range of surgical disciplines including Orthopaedics, General Surgery, Gynaecology, Plastics, Dermatology, Ophthalmology and Pain. Staff are expected to support other sites within the health board, when necessary, thus the successful candidate must demonstrate flexibility within the service Main duties of the job The post holder will be required to work as a competent member of the Day Surgery team within the unit. Nurses / Practitioners are required to maintain a high standard of patient care under the direction of the senior members of the clinical staff. They are expected to take delegated responsibility in a given shift for adult patients. There is an expectation to work in accordance with the standards set by the Nursing / Midwifery / HCP Professional Bodies, and in accordance with Trust Policies and Guidelines. Previous perioperative experience is desirable, but training can be given. The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply. Qualifications Essential criteria Registered General Nurse (RGN) NMC Registered OR Operating Department Practitioner (ODP) HCPC registered Knowledge of the Recovery area Evidence of professional development that at least meets the minimum requirement of the post holder's professional body Mentorship qualification Desirable criteria Degree level education or a willingness to work towards Intermediate Life Support trained IV Therapy and Pump Training approved courses Mentorship qualification Experience Essential criteria Working within a hospital setting Desirable criteria Previous experience working in a critical care environment, theatre department or postoperative surgical setting Recovery experience with knowledge of managing airway complications, administering medications including controlled Drugs and providing effective management of post nausea/vomiting Skills and Attributes Essential criteria Good communication skills Knowledge of current issues in health care Knowledge of research and its application in practice Efficient use of equipment and materials Comprehensive knowledge of ABUHB policy and procedures Good written and IT skills Able to work under pressure Patient and Public focussed Caring and empathetic Adopts a flexible approach to work and shift patterns Prepared to be accountable for own practice Professionally assertive. Must be willing to act as a patient’s advocate in communications with other Healthcare Professional’s Demonstrates awareness of professional limitations Willingness to show initiative and self-directed learning Flexibility to help and support other areas within the unit when required Desirable criteria Appreciation of audit and research methodologies Able to demonstrate a problem-solving approach Knowledge Essential criteria Knowledge of the role of the recovery practitioner in a theatre environment Awareness of surgical stages and the patients journey through the theatre department Values and behaviours of the Trust framework Desirable criteria An understanding of the importance of Informed consent guidelines Surgical safety procedures and guidelines NATSSIPS/LOCSSIPS Occupational health guidelines World Health Organisation Safer Surgery Guidelines B.A.D.S G.I.R.F.T. Other Essential criteria Be adaptable to have a flexible approach to work where you may sometimes have to support different areas within the unit and other sites within ABUHB. Desirable criteria Satisfactory Standard/Enhanced DBS clearance including an/a Adults and Children’s Barred List check (delete as appropriate)
