Thisis an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic paediatric trainee (mostsuitable for ST5 or and suitable for ST4+ with at least six months experienceat tier 2 level) to develop their skills and experience in medical educationand educational leadership, through a focus on undergraduatepaediatriceducation.

The undergraduate paediatric course or ICU (integrated course unit) is set in Year4 of the five-year MBChB programme at the University of Leeds. There are approximately 300 students per year that are divided into 5 ICU groups of 60 students. Each of these ICU groups rotate into paediatrics over a 6-week period through the academic year. You would be working alongside academic and clinical teams to support the University undergraduate programme for the teaching and assessment of paediatrics and child health.

Thispost will be for 3 days a week in the paediatric education post during daytime working with a full on-call commitment to general paediatrics or a paediatric speciality on the HST rota experience working on a middle grade rota is desirable/beneficial. Appointed trainees will be able to express a preference for the specialty in which they work clinically - the placement cannot be guaranteed but will be facilitated wherever possible.


Main duties of the job

* Assist in the general running of the course both at an ICU level and for Leeds students.
* Help to organise and deliver lectures and seminar teaching, especially in introductory week.
* Organise and deliver ward-based clinical teaching.
* Assist with tutoring of students, helping to recruit, train, support and enthuse tutors, and to take on the lead tutor role where possible.
* Assist in provision of pastoral and academic support to students as necessary within the course.


Assessment

* Assist with reviewing assessments at the end of each 6-week block.
* Help prepare written and OSCE examination material in liaison with the Year 4 Assessment Lead, the Paediatric Assessment Lead, and the Paediatric Course Manager.


Additional roles

* Represent paediatrics on the course management team, to support the assessment and moderation process.
* Help with Year 4 Theme Day teaching (runs 3 times a year).
* Supervision of elective and physician associate students.
* Keep paediatric course materials on the VLE up to date.

You will be working closely alongside the Paediatric ICU (integrated course unit) team, including academic and clinical leads, assessment lead and clinical educators. We are a group of experienced educators and assessors who can support your development in medical education and leadership. Teaching sessions occur across both the University site, in the Worsley building, and clinical sites at Leeds Children's hospital.

Person Specification


Clinical, Academic, and Personal Skills

* Ability to apply sound clinical knowledge and judgement to problems and ability to prioritise clinical need.
* Ability to maximise safety and minimise risk.
* Recognition of and ability to undertake the initial management of an acutely ill patient.
* APLS or EPALS or equivalent must be valid.
* Demonstrates understanding of research, including awareness of ethical issues.
* Demonstrates understanding of the basic principles of audit, clinical risk management, evidence-based practice, patient safety and clinical quality improvement initiatives.
* Demonstrates knowledge of evidence-informed practice.
* Demonstrates clarity in written/spoken communication & capacity to adapt language as appropriate to the situation.
* Able to build rapport, listen, persuade and negotiate problem solving and decision making.
* Capacity to use logical/lateral thinking to solve problems/make decisions, indicating an analytical/scientific approach.
* Completed a resuscitation council generic instructor course.
* Experience in teaching or education.
* Extracurricular activities/achievements relevant to clinical education.


Experience

* Be eligible for full registration with, and hold a current licence to practice from the GMC at the intended start date.
* Eligibility to work in the UK.
* Advanced Paediatric Life Support Certificate from the Resuscitation Council UK or equivalent.
* At least 1 year experience in the UK, in addition to 2 years experience overall.
* Is up to date and fit to practice safely and is aware of own training needs.
* All applicants to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues.
* Experience working on a middle grade rota is desirable.


Qualifications

* MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
* Successful completion of MRCPCH by time of interview.


Eligibility, Fitness to practice, and Language Skills

* Be eligible for full registration with, and hold a current licence to practice from the GMC at the intended start date.
* Eligibility to work in the UK.
* Advanced Paediatric Life Support Certificate from the Resuscitation Council UK or equivalent.
* At least 1 year experience in the UK, in addition to 2 years experience overall.
* Is up to date and fit to practice safely and is aware of own training needs.
* All applicants to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues.

Fixed-term role details

This is a fixed‑term role for 12 months. The role would be undertaken out of training.
