Applications are invited for a Consultant in Acute Medicine at West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust, based within the Acute Medical Unit (AMU). This is a permanent contract.
The AMU is a busy, varied, and fast-paced environment supported by a multidisciplinary team including specialist registrars, advanced clinical practitioners, physician associates, and nursing staff. The role involves providing comprehensive and timely assessments of patients presenting to the AMU, including the acute assessment unit, short stay ward, and Same Day Emergency Care.
The successful candidate will join the existing team of AMU consultants, with opportunities for allocated sessions in other specialist interests.

Main duties of the job
* Join the existing Acute Medical Consultants in assessing patients presenting to the AMU.
* Conduct ward rounds on the short stay ward, review patients within the Acute Assessment Unit, and participate in Same Day Emergency Care.
* Participate in teaching and training of junior staff, medical students, and advanced nurse/clinical practitioners.
* Engage actively in departmental and trust clinical governance and audit activities.
* For candidates with a specialist interest, there may be an opportunity to provide up to 3 sessions of specialist activity per week.

Job responsibilities
The AMU assesses approximately 1,000 medical patients per month. It includes single-sex accommodation, AAU with a dedicated assessment area, ambulatory emergency care, and monitored trollies providing level 2 care. We have established a cardiology review clinic within ambulatory care and a short stay ward for stays less than 72 hours. The unit works closely with community services to optimize patient care and reduce unnecessary admissions, including pathways for suspected DVT and anticoagulation management.

Person Specification
Qualifications and Specialist Training
* Entry on the GMC Specialist Register in General (Internal) Medicine or Acute Medicine with a license to practice or eligibility within six months of completing training.
* MRCP or equivalent.
* Full GMC registration with a license to practice.
* MD or PhD.
Experience and Clinical Expertise
* Completion of supervised training in an appropriate SpR training program or equivalent to UK CCT requirements.
* Ability to offer expert clinical opinions in adult general/emergency medicine.
* Ability to take full and independent responsibility for patient care.
Management and Audit Experience
* Ability to advise on efficient service management.
* Leadership skills for multidisciplinary teams.
* Experience in service development, clinical governance, and audit.
* Willingness to work within NHS performance frameworks and targets.
Teaching Experience
* Supervising FY1s, FY2s, ST1s, ST2s, ST3+s, and SpRs.
* Experience with workplace-based assessments.
* Ability to teach clinical skills to students and trainees.
* Experience teaching undergraduates and other professional groups.
Research Experience
* Applying research outcomes to clinical practice.
* Conducting research projects and publishing in peer-reviewed journals.
