About Working In Assessment

The first contact any family or professional has with our assessment service sets the tone for our working relationship. Our practice is based on consent, strong relationships with families and with partners. Using motivational approaches, the assessment social worker engages with the family and the supporting network to understand presenting worries and determine whether a statutory social work service is required. If not, a plan to support the family at a lower level of need will be put in place to meet the needs of the child and family.

One Voice

You will have a sense of belonging within your team and the wider service areas. You will receive high quality supervision, with a commitment to dedicating time to the work with children and families, enabling you to work creatively and holistically while also caring for your wellbeing and career development.

Surrey is committed to supporting and nurturing you so you can be the best version of yourself. Our Surrey Children\'s Service Academy offers over 60 courses and a bespoke learning programme. Modules such as motivational interviewing and total respect help you to have essential conversations while maintaining a child-centered approach.

Inclusive Approach & How to Apply

To apply you will need to upload your CV and answer the following questions:

* Please tell us what has motivated you to apply for this role?
* Please tell us about the key skills and experience you will be able to bring to this role.
* Working in an Assessment team can be fast-paced, unpredictable and often requires multi-tasking. Using an example, please tell us how you cope under pressure?

If shortlisted, you will be invited to a short first round virtual interview (approximately 15-20 minutes) to explore your answers. If successful, you will be invited for an in-person interview to meet the team and view the office.

We are committed to inclusive recruitment. If invited to a face-to-face interview, we will share the themes of the questions in advance to help you prepare.

The job advert closes at 23:59 on the 6th October 2025. An enhanced DBS check will be required for this role. You will need to be registered with Social Work England. A valid driving licence and access to a vehicle to travel across a wide geographical area may be required. Reasonable adjustments will be made for applicants with disabilities or long-term health conditions.

Surrey County Council is preparing for Local Government Reorganisation, moving towards a smaller number of unitary councils by April 2027. This role will transfer under the new arrangements with terms and conditions intact.
