Job description

We are seeking a suitably qualified Chief Cardiac Physiologist to join our team at Ashford and St. Peters NHS Foundation Trust. We are a very active department providing a wide range of investigations and are looking to expand our team of multi‑skilled cardiac physiologists. The successful applicant will be influential in the direction of the department and development of the EP services that we provide; we are the leading centre in Surrey for Electrophysiology studies and ablation. The applicant will be participating in 24/7 PPCI service.

Applicants should have extensive experience in invasive and non‑invasive cardiology, and be specialised in Electrophysiology & Cardiac Rhythm Management. The post holder will still benefit from the opportunity to rotate through all aspects of the department as EP lists run two to three days each week.

The department offers a wide range of invasive and non‑invasive investigations, including echocardiography, physiologist‑led exercise testing, 24‑hour ECG and BP monitoring and event recording. We have a busy Pacemaker/ICD implant and follow‑up service; we are the leading implant centre in Surrey for ICDs and CRTs with an extensive remotely‑monitored patient population.


Responsibilities

* To provide clinical and administrative support in the EP service, working alongside other physiologist leads to ensure delivery of a quality clinical service.
* To undertake, supervise, and teach at a high level with simple and complex Pacing/ICD/CRT implants and Electrophysiology Studies/RF Ablation, as well as an expectation to support PCI and diagnostic angiography.
* To maintain a progressive learning environment within invasive cardiology ensuring the development of all.
* To work within a 24/7 PPCI service and work weekends on a rotational basis on‑call.


Clinical Duties

* To maintain standards of technical competency in EP and in the provision of all technical cardiac procedures (invasive and non‑invasive).
* To effectively, promptly, and professionally respond to emergency situations maintaining control and requesting assistance as necessary.
* To be responsible for identifying equipment faults, and directly resolve fault issues by reporting them in a timely manner.
* To provide first line interpretation and full technical reports of individual tests performed whilst reviewing/assisting with the reporting of studies performed by junior staff members.
* To remain up to date with latest trends in clinical physiology translating these into practice and transferring this knowledge to staff within one's area of responsibility.
* To assist with research studies as required.
* To ensure all patients receive appropriate and individualised care.
* To participate in the 24/7 on‑call PPCI service provided by the Clinical Measurements.


Managerial Duties

* To take responsibility for day to day running of the EP service including stock management and ordering, and to ensure that staff are aware of the economical use of supplies.
* To ensure that all data entered on the invasive (EP and pacing) database is timely and accurate and that statistical records and audits are produced when required.
* To deputise for the Operations Manager & Principal Cardiac Physiologist when necessary for management of the department.
* To be responsible for the management of junior cardiac physiology personnel.
* To assist with all aspects of the organisation and performance of the invasive service.
* To work with the Operations Manager & Principal Cardiac Physiologist to ensure procedures are in place to achieve Government targets in Cardiac Physiology services.
* To assist in the development of protocols, guidelines, and policies within the department. To implement local policies and guidelines and ensure these are adhered to at all times.
* To work in accordance with standards set by the Society for Cardiological Sciences and Technology (SCST) and the Registration Council for Clinical Physiologists (RCCP).
* To be familiar with the use of Solus, Cerner Millennium and any other computerised systems integral to the running of the department.
* To manage own time to achieve a balance between clinical and administrative duties.
* To assist with the recruitment and retention of staff within the Clinical Measurements Department.
* To undertake any other reasonable duties at the discretion of the Operations Manager & Principal Cardiac Physiologist or his deputies.
* To communicate with manufacturers/suppliers regarding stock and/or equipment management.
* To authorise agency/overtime/sickness in line with local policies.


Personnel

* To conduct self in a professional manner and act as a role model to junior staff at all times.
* To undertake service provision and/or training in other areas of Cardiac Physiology, as required.
* To supervise the training, development and appraisal of professional competence of all staff within one's area of responsibility.
* To demonstrate leadership, achieving good morale with open communication between all levels of staff and disciplines.
* To contribute to and actively participate in the correct reporting and handling of incidents and accidents.


Education & Training

* To actively participate and commit to maintaining own personal professional development, identifying educational and clinical training needs in conjunction with the Operations Manager & Principal Cardiac Physiologist.
* To maintain professional accreditation through appropriate Continuous Professional and Personal Development.
* To ensure that own mandatory training is up to date.
* To participate in the training and development of local competencies of junior staff within the department.
* To actively maintain a progressive learning environment for all grades and disciplines of staff within the area of responsibility.
* To support a rigorous training programme within the department ensuring all physiologists attain state registration.


Administration

* To register patient attendances on the departments Solus database.
* To book appointments onto Solus, facilitating patient choice.
* To be familiar with Cerner Millennium to track patient progression, case notes, and patient demographic and episode details.
* To order portering services on the Cerner Millennium to facilitate movement of patients and/or equipment.
* To communicate efficiently on the telephone with all staff, patients, and visitors.
* To maintain cleanliness and tidiness in the department.
* To be cost‑effective in the use of equipment and resources.
* To telephone patients who fail to attend for their appointment, re‑booking patients as per patient choice, and to telephone outstanding returns of ambulatory monitors.
* To undertake any other reasonable duties at the discretion of the Operations Manager & Principal Cardiac Physiologist or his deputies.
