Industrial Heritage Technician | £25,989 - £28,142 per annum | 37 hours per week | Permanent - Full time | Museum Service | Burnley

Lancashire County Museum Service is currently recruiting an Industrial Heritage Technician to join the technical team caring for the Lancashire textile industry collection – designated by Arts Council England as being of national importance. If you would like to help us maintain, operate, dismantle, re-site and re-assemble working historic textile machinery at our two textile mill sites, we would like to hear from you.

Your new role:

It will be in person and based at the museum sites of Helmshore in Rossendale and Queen Street Mill in Harle Syke, Burnley. It will be full time (37 hrs per week) and paid at Grade 5 (£25,989 - £28,142).

Your responsibilities will include:

1. Assisting the Senior Industrial Heritage Technician in the safe and effective operation of working historic machinery with special reference to the carding, spinning, and weaving of cotton, and water and steam power systems in textile mills.

2. Undertaking in-house and external training to progress from 'Learner' operative level to 'Practitioner' operative level within 18 months.

3. Undertaking appropriate maintenance of working, static and associated machinery under the direction of the Senior Industrial Heritage Technician and in conjunction with curatorial & technical staff.

4. Ensuring Health and Safety compliance at all times for the maintenance and operation of all heritage machinery and site workshops.

5. Maintaining full documentary records regarding the operation, repair, and maintenance of all machinery.

6. Sharing knowledge to visitors, staff and others about their work, the collections and the processes and procedures of the historic textile industries.

Promote the activities of the Lancashire County Museum Service and the heritage of Lancashire.

What we need from you:

A keen interest in machinery with ideally a science or engineering background either from education, work experience, or pastime. Qualifications may be an advantage but we need as a minimum 3 GCSE equivalent passes including Maths and English. Full on the job training will be given, but an appreciation of the heritage sector, and willingness to gain an in-depth knowledge of the Lancashire textile industry are essential as is some knowledge of Health & Safety at work procedures.
