Senior Mechanical Engineer

Location: Whitehaven, Cumbria

Hybrid: Required in the office 3 days per week and 2 days remote

Inside IR35

Rate: Up to £55/hr Umbrella

BPSS clearance will be required at basic level. Prior clearance will not be transferable.

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Mechanical Engineer to join our team. You will be responsible for delivering work packages across various system scopes for all three SEP machines, tackling mechanical handling and lifting challenges, and providing innovative solutions to ensure project success. Your expertise will contribute to developing fit-for-purpose mechanical design solutions while adhering to budget, schedule, and regulatory standards.


Key Responsibilities:

1. Deliver mechanical design solutions for complex systems across multiple SEP machines, ensuring they are fit for purpose, on budget, and within schedule.
2. Break down complex problems and present multiple resolution options, driving informed decision-making.
3. Contribute to the production, delivery, and reporting of work plans and progress.
4. Communicate effectively with stakeholders, both verbally and in writing, to ensure clarity and alignment.
5. Apply knowledge of regulations relevant to machinery delivery (e.g., SOMSR 2008, CDM, PUWER, LOLER) to ensure compliance.
6. Review and check engineering drawings, adhering to standards (e.g., BS 8888 & GPS).
7. Review, understand, and challenge engineering calculations in line with standards (e.g., BS 2573).
8. Support the development of manufacturing specifications and assist with queries and issues.
9. Contribute to creating EO packs, component quality requirements, and technical files, ensuring high standards.
10. Produce and verify design substantiation and safety case deliverables, ensuring compliance with safety and engineering standards.


Essential Qualifications and Skills

1. Chartered Engineer (CEng) or Incorporated Engineer (IEng) status.
2. Experience in delivering mechanical design solutions that meet cost and schedule targets.
3. Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to break down complex issues and present practical solutions.
4. Ability to contribute to work plans and reporting.
5. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with diverse stakeholders.
6. In-depth knowledge of relevant machinery regulations (e.g., SOMSR 2008, CDM, PUWER, LOLER).
7. Familiarity with engineering drawing standards (e.g., BS 8888, GPS) and review skills.
8. Competence in reviewing and challenging engineering calculations per BS 2573.


Desirable Qualifications and Skills

1. Evidence of applying engineering judgment for evidence- and risk-based decisions.
2. Experience in creating manufacturing specifications and resolving manufacturing queries.
3. Familiarity with EO packs, component quality, and technical files.
4. Experience in producing and reviewing safety case deliverables and design substantiation.
5. Knowledge of European Health, Safety, and Environmental Requirements (EHSRs).
