Posted: 11 July
Offer description

We are looking for a Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner to work alongside an integrated mental health team based at HMP Full Sutton.

Rethink Mental Illness collaborates with Tees, Esk and Wear Valley NHS Foundation Trust (TEWV) and Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust to deliver an integrated stepped care mental health service within HMP Full Sutton.

Main duties of the job

You will be part of an integrated primary care mental health team within the prison, providing high-volume, low-intensity interventions, including cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) based self-management interventions for clients with mild to moderate anxiety and depression. This involves offering guided self-help in both 1:1 and group formats, in line with current Step 2 IAPT guidelines. You should be an accredited PWP, either with BPS or BABCP.

You will also collaborate with the following teams and individuals within Rethink:

* Associate Director for Criminal Justice and Care Navigation
* Head of Criminal Justice and Secure Care
* Head of Care Navigation
* Counsellors
* Health and Wellbeing Coaches
* Care Navigators

About us

The team comprises highly skilled professionals working collaboratively to provide quality care for those with mental health needs within the prison. Rethink Mental Illness operates from 0800 to 1600, Monday to Friday.

You will deliver Step 1 interventions as part of an integrated care mental health team, supporting the prison population's mental health. The team promotes self-management of recovery, building trusting, non-judgmental relationships with clients, ranging from providing information, support, signposting, facilitating group activities, developing Peer Mentors, and engaging service users. You will work with other team members to ensure high-quality mental health support during incarceration and planning for release into the community.

Join us if you want to be part of an organization dedicated to helping those severely impacted by mental illness. We believe in treating everyone with respect and dignity; equity is one of our core values.

Job responsibilities

Accept referrals via agreed protocols, assess suitability, and refer clients to appropriate services or escalate to high intensity treatment as needed. Support clients in self-managing their recovery, conducting person-centered assessments, and identifying areas for change or recovery while evaluating risks.

Provide assessments and low-intensity interventions, such as psycho-educational interventions and Guided Self-Help, drawing from CBT theories. Implement evidence-based interventions using a self-management model of mental health care.

Attend multidisciplinary meetings, ensure appropriate step-up and step-down arrangements, maintain client confidentiality, and record outcomes and clinical data accurately. Collaborate with other disciplines and statutory/non-statutory agencies regarding ongoing care, especially upon release from prison.

Adhere to activity contracts regarding client contacts and clinical sessions, support monthly performance data collection, and communicate effectively with clients and professionals both verbally and in writing. Maintain an open, transparent attitude, utilize supervision, uphold Rethink Mental Illness values, and be flexible, including providing contingency cover for other prisons if required.

* Completed an academic course aligned with the IAPT Low Intensity National Programme and qualified as a PWP (e.g., Post Grad Diploma in Psychological Therapies).
* Training in nursing, social work, occupational therapy, arts therapy, or psychological therapy.
* Knowledge of medications for anxiety, depression, and other common mental health issues.
* Knowledge or experience in other therapy modalities relevant to practice as a PWP (e.g., solution-focused therapy, supervision training).

Experience

* Post-qualification experience delivering evidence-based IAPT low-intensity interventions at Step 2.
* Experience working within a stepped care service with recovery outcomes.
* Knowledge of assessment procedures, screening, referral, record-keeping, and brief psychological interventions.
