In 2025, Willow Wood Hospice will have been serving the population of Tameside and Glossop by providing palliative and end-of-life care for adults with life-limiting illnesses and their families for over 25 years. We are now recruiting into a newly created and exciting role as a Lead Doctor following the redesign of our medical team.
Main duties of the job
This is a senior leadership position and we need somebody who cares passionately about providing the excellent care upon which we have built our reputation.
You will work with a team of special interest doctors, specialist nurses and a wider team of allied health professionals all of whom are committed to providing excellent care. The salary for the post is commensurate with the NHS and will be paid according to your experience. Your NHS pension scheme can also be continued.

Job responsibilities
Job Summary: To lead the medical team in delivering holistic specialist palliative and end-of-life care; assessing, delivering, and overseeing care to meet the physical, social, spiritual, and psychological needs of patients and their families.
Clinical Role
* Act as the responsible clinician for the management, continuity, and delivery of all medical care to patients on the inpatient unit throughout their stay.
* Provide medical care and advice to patients, families, and significant others as appropriate and in accordance with professional practice.
* Provide medical leadership and mentorship across hospice services including multidisciplinary clinical review meetings.
* Play a key role in developing and delivering high-quality, person-centred palliative care services.
* Be actively involved in direct patient care, supporting colleagues as needed from complex case management to general support.
* Foster a culture of compassion, learning, and clinical excellence.
* Collaborate with the clinical leadership team on service innovation and strategy, working across the locality in partnership with other providers.
* Lead hospice audit programmes and participate in regional collaborative audits.
* Lead clinical governance activities such as education, training, incidents, and complaints.
* Participate in the on-call rota for medical cover.
* Work closely with the Consultant in Palliative Medicine at Tameside and Glossop NHS Trust and other care providers.
* Maintain accurate, comprehensive medical records for review, learning, and audit purposes.
Management & admin responsibilities
* Provide proactive, visible leadership and strategic resource management to support high-quality, responsive care.
* Work across teams and organizations to ensure effective communication and collaboration.
* Role-model professional standards and foster a culture of accountability within the medical team.
* Engage in regular appraisals, performance reviews, and training needs assessments.
* Promote effective communication and a positive, inclusive culture through collaborative working.
* Lead governance, risk management, and policy development, representing the service externally.
* Adhere to policies and procedures, supporting the delivery of the hospice’s 5-year strategy.
Learning & Development
* Maintain GMC registration and participate in continuous professional development.
* Provide teaching, education, and training for hospice staff and external healthcare professionals.
* Supervise and mentor junior medical staff and visiting medical staff, including medical students.
General
* Must be able to attend the hospice within 1 hour while on-call.
