Background / Overview

The British Antarctic Survey (BAS) is seeking a Sustainability Data Manager to join its Innovation Team. This is a key role working across the organisation to support the decarbonisation of BAS operations and drive the delivery of its carbon reduction strategies.

The successful candidate will bring strong analytical capability and proven experience in energy and carbon assessment. You will play a central role in interpreting and presenting data that underpins strategic decision-making for the BAS Decarbonisation Management Group and the Antarctic Infrastructure Modernisation Programme (AIMP). Your work will span energy, carbon, travel, and wider sustainability metrics.

Working closely with Project Managers, AIMP staff, Estates engineers and facilities managers, you will use data‑driven insights to diagnose issues, evaluate interventions, and identify opportunities for carbon reduction. This includes assessing the energy performance of buildings and quantifying savings achieved from carbon reduction projects and infrastructure improvements.

You will be responsible for analysing energy, fuel, and carbon data across Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions, covering the full breadth of BAS operations, including Cambridge‑based activities, Antarctic research stations, marine and aviation operations, business travel, and major infrastructure projects. The role will lead BAS carbon accounting and reporting, including submissions to the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and UK Research and Innovation (UKRI).

This position supports the delivery and ongoing monitoring of sustainability targets, aligned with the UKRI sustainability strategy and the mandatory HM Treasury Greening Government Commitments (GGCs).

You will collaborate closely with the Net Zero team to advance BAS’s transition to Net Zero, with a focus on reducing emissions and improving sustainability across infrastructure, transport and logistics, and the supply chain. The role also involves working with the Environment team and AIMP teams, contributing to relevant committees and working groups focused on sustainability and Net Zero delivery.

In addition, you will engage with NERC and other research organisations to share best practice and support the development of benchmarks. You will contribute to communicating BAS’s Net Zero achievements and initiatives to the wider polar community and public audiences.

Duties

1. Carbon accounting and reporting - supporting growing demand for reporting

* Ensuring timely collation of data (Scope 1, Scope 2 and Scope 3) within the environmental database and validation of this data prior to reporting deadlines.
* Contributing to the sustainability section of the UKRI Annual report through provision of environmental case studies and GHG performance data.
* Assessing progress on the various decarbonisation projects and providing support and advice to project managers and engineers to ensure net zero objectives and targets can be met.
* Reporting on AIMP emissions and wider Scope 3 activity such as construction projects, chartered ships and aircraft, commercial freight, including purchased goods and services.

2. Energy/Carbon data management and analysis (Cambridge, Antarctic Stations, Ships, Aircraft, Travel data, Projects)

* Ensuring proper operation of the data collecting systems and processes, e.g. metering systems, sustainability and energy/carbon data collection processes and forms. Working closely with IT and facility managers to report issues and resolve them.
* Improving and automating data collection methods.
* Improving and ensuring quality and accuracy of data.
* Producing dashboards, energy performance reports and graphics.
* Comparing actual energy consumption of new buildings, redevelopments and retrofit measures with that predicted.
* Participating in investigations into any performance gap.
* Using information from meters and other sources to audit building/ship energy use and making recommendations for improvement.

3. Assist with the activities of the Decarbonisation Management Group

* Developing an Energy Auditing Programme for all Antarctic Stations, Cambridge and SDA: preparing energy check lists, interviewing users to understand energy use patterns, delivering annual energy audits to identify opportunities for improvement, and training staff to conduct audits in Antarctica.
* Assisting with the implementation of the BAS Travel strategy (travel data analysis, carbon budget allocation to teams, encouraging teams to set targets).
* Contributing to information gathering for feasibility studies and business cases.
* Updating information on the Carbon Management Plan.
* Preparing information/engagement material for the BAS website and intranet.
* Engaging with BAS staff to promote the Net Zero Carbon Strategy.
* Assisting at workshops with different BAS groups or other stakeholders.

4. Present your work in small groups and contribute to wider audience presentations.

* Strong background in:
o Data management and reporting through studies and work experience.
o Energy performance of buildings, energy efficiency and carbon in the built environment.
o Energy/carbon reduction systems and technologies.
o Greenhouse gas accounting and reporting processes.
* Experience in energy monitoring and data analysis to identify trends and performance gaps.
