Stantec's market-leading Environmental Services group supports clients in the environmental, geotechnical, and water sectors. We work with businesses and water companies across the UK and occasionally internationally.


The Opportunity

You will join a friendly team of over 80 Hydrologists, Hydrogeologists, Water Resources Planners and Water Quality Scientists as part of our wider Water Environment Team. These team projects include enhancing the resilience of the public water supply and reducing the impact of wastewater treatment infrastructure on the water environment, with opportunities to contribute to flood risk modelling, sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) Modelling, and nature-based solutions.


Responsibilities

* Delivering water resource management, hydrological and hydraulic modelling, drainage and flood mitigation, and climate impact assessment projects.
* Managing projects and maintaining client relationships.
* Assisting with winning work and the development of new business within the water environment team.
* Providing technical guidance, support and training to junior colleagues and assisting, where practicable, in the mentoring and development of others.


Projects and Focus Areas

* Flood hydrology and hydraulic modelling studies incorporating the impact of climate change.
* Completion of Flood Risk Assessments to support planning applications.
* Low flow assessments and water systems modelling to define the availability of water for supply during droughts.
* Design and test nature-based solutions to assist with flooding and water quality improvements.
* Climate change risk assessments of assets or portfolios of assets.
* Additionally, experience with SuDS, catchment management, and water quality assessments is valued.


About You

You will ideally have skills in hydraulic and hydrological modelling, reporting, data management, analysis, and presentation of results. A degree in a relevant subject (environmental science, civil engineering, geography, or related discipline with a strong hydrology/hydraulics focus) is expected, with several years’ consultancy experience in hydrology, flood risk and/or drainage.

* Preparation of Flood Risk Assessments.
* Hydraulic modelling with 1D-2D packages (e.g., Flood Modeller-TUFLOW, HEC-RAS, MIKE FLOOD, InfoWorks ICM); completion of fluvial, pluvial and tidal modelling and design of flood protection systems.
* Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) design and green-blue infrastructure planning.
* Hydrological modelling using FEH methods (ReFH2, WINFAP) to estimate peak flows and hydrographs.
* Analysis of hydrometric data, gauging station records, and development of ratings curves; calibration of rainfall-runoff models.
* Low flow studies/drought assessments; Environmental Impact Assessments for water resources and quality.
* GIS (QGIS/Arc), coding (Python) and database management are valuable assets.
* Chartered (or near Chartered) with an appropriate professional body.
* Experience in mentoring junior staff.

In addition, some experience in the following areas would be a distinct advantage:

* Water quality assessments and modelling (including sediment transport).
* Quarry or mining-specific FRAs/FCAs; river restoration studies.
* Integrated catchment management and climate change adaptation planning.


Location

Although the remit is national, this role will ideally be based in either our Bristol and Cardiff offices or Leeds and Newcastle.
