Milk Education is proud to be working in partnership with a range of supportive, inclusive, and well-resourced SEND schools and specialist provisions across Darlington. We are currently seeking dedicated and compassionate SEND Teaching Assistants to support pupils with additional needs across various age groups.
We offer a variety of opportunities, including daily supply, short-term roles, and long-term placements, giving you the flexibility to suit your availability and career goals.
This role is ideal for experienced SEND Teaching Assistants, Level 2 or Level 3 qualified practitioners, graduates considering a career in education, or individuals with relevant transferable experience.
SEND Teaching Assistant – Key Responsibilities
1. Provide tailored classroom support to pupils with special educational needs and disabilities
2. Deliver 1:1 and small group interventions to support learning and development
3. Support communication and interaction using strategies such as visual aids, Makaton, or PECS where appropriate
4. Assist the teacher with adapting lessons and resources to meet individual needs
5. Support pupils with SEND, including ASD, ADHD, SEMH, and speech and language difficulties
6. Implement behaviour management strategies in line with individual support plans and school policies
7. Encourage pupil engagement, independence, and emotional regulation
8. Support pupils with transitions, routines, and structured activities throughout the day
9. Assist with personal care and daily needs where required
10. Observe, monitor, and report on pupil progress, behaviour, and wellbeing
SEND Teaching Assistant – Candidate Requirements
To be considered for this role, candidates should demonstrate:
11. Previous experience supporting children or young people with SEND in an educational or care setting
12. A Level 2 or Level 3 Supporting Teaching and Learning qualification (desirable)
13. A good understanding of different SEND needs and how to support them effectively
14. Confidence in supporting communication, behaviour, and sensory needs
15. A patient, nurturing, and adaptable approach
16. Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively within a team
17. A clear understanding of safeguarding and child protection procedures
18. An Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to obtain one)
We also welcome applications from graduates or individuals with transferable experience in areas such as care work, youth work, mentoring, tutoring, or support work.
