Job Description (Roles and Responsibilities)
Main purpose of job:
The British High Commission in Georgetown, Guyana, is looking for an individual to join our team as Head of Maintenance. The individual is expected to carry out maintenance works and ensure the operational and safe functioning of the British High Commission Estate. Also, be the High Commission main technical and supervisory contact for outside contractors, and act as a reserve driver for the High Commission.
Roles and responsibilities:
General Maintenance:
To carry out routine maintenance work across the British High Commission estate (Office, High Commissioners Official Residence, other properties) to ensure all properties are in good and safe condition. You will work closely with the Estates Manager to identify key issues to be addressed and ensure timely and cost effective delivering. Examples of routine work include but are not limited to painting of walls, plumbing tasks, minor electrical work, installation and maintenance of fire alarms, preventative maintenance of air condition units and generators, checking water tanks, changing light bulbs, cleaning external windows, fence repair, maintaining inventories, etc.
Managing the Internal Maintenance Work Request Form (MWF) system:
Lead on the internal MWF system and ensure that the associated Excel spreadsheet is kept up to date and ensure that requests are promptly handled within the required deadline and that the officers concerned are aware of developments / works happening at their properties.
Events Support:
To lead on physical set up for events hosted at the High Commission or the residence, e.g. furniture, sound system etc, and restoring the venue to the normal layout post event. The jobholder is also responsible for ensuring adequate maintenance and storage of such equipment and ensuring that health and safety guidance is followed for all events.
Transport:
Drive to complete maintenance tasks, act as the reserve driver for the High Commission. This includes, covering when one of the two High Commission drivers are on leave / unwell and driving official vehicles which is often taking the High Commissioner to / from meetings or events.
Other tasks:
Removal / storage of furniture, preparation for furniture sales, (when required); accompanying Internal stakeholders, visiting consultants, and others as necessary (i.e. AC, generator maintenance, electricians etc), and any other tasks that may be assigned from time to time.

Applicants will need to be a Guyanese Citizen or have a valid work permit from the Ministry of Home Affairs at the time of application.
Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, e.g. some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.
Appointable candidates who were unsuccessful may be placed on a 'reserve list. If during the reserve period of 6 months the same or largely similar role becomes available, that role may be offered to the second of subsequent candidate.

Working patterns:
Full time on site working from 8:00-16:00 Mon-Thurs and 08:00-14:00 on Friday. The role will also include occasional evening and weekend work as required (e.g. events).
