About the role
We are developing a small, thoughtful second-hand and antiquarian bookselling project alongside a progressive independent school and creative education environment. Inspired by our Artist in Residence programme, we are inviting a Bookseller in Residence to help shape, curate, and grow the project from the ground up.
This is an ideal opportunity for someone who loves books, enjoys browsing, sorting and valuing stock, and is curious about the craft of bookselling — without the pressure of a conventional retail role.
What you'll be doing
Depending on your interests and strengths, the role may include:
* Sorting, cataloguing and curating second-hand and vintage books
* Researching editions, values, and resale routes
* Listing books on UK-based platforms (e.g. AbeBooks, Alibris, eBay, etc.)
* Helping develop themed collections or specialist niches
* Assisting with occasional book sales, clearances or auctions
* Contributing ideas to how the project grows over time
The role is flexible and self-directed — hours and focus can be shaped around your availability and interests.
Who this might suit
* A book lover, librarian, academic, student, or early-career bookseller
* Someone curious about how second-hand and antiquarian bookselling works in practice
* A retired or semi-retired person looking for an engaging, low-pressure project
* Anyone exploring a portfolio career or creative side-project
No formal bookselling experience is required — curiosity, care, and reliability matter more.
What's on offer
* A share of proceeds from books sold that you have helped catalogue or sell
* Hands-on experience in real-world bookselling
* Access to a large and interesting stock of books
* A calm, creative rural setting
* Scope to shape the role and leave your mark on the project
This is a voluntary role, not an employed position. There is no salary or expense reimbursement, but the proceeds-sharing model allows you to benefit directly from the success of the books you work with.
