We are looking for a proactive and creative Communications Assistant to join our fast-paced, forward-thinking communications team. Based at MOD Lyneham, this role offers the opportunity to help shape the voice of The Defence School of Electronic and Mechanical Engineering (DSEME). Working closely with the Communications Manager, you will support the day-to-day delivery of communications, press, and public relations to drive awareness, safeguard reputation, and ensure clear and impactful messaging. As our Communications Assistant, you will help develop and deliver engaging communication strategies that spotlight our three units — 8 Training Battalion REME, The REME Arms School, and No 4 School of Technical Training. You will play a hands-on role in crafting content while building strong relationships across DSEME, the Defence College of Technical Training, and the wider Defence community. You will participate in corporate and internal communications, support policy updates, announcements, and crisis communications as needed, ensuring consistency in tone and alignment with MOD branding. Working closely with the Mitie Communications Manager and our unit teams, you will contribute your communications expertise to multi-channel campaigns, helping to bring the breadth and depth of our training delivery to life.
Responsibilities
* Support the day-to-day delivery of communications, press, and public relations to drive awareness and safeguarding reputation with clear, impactful messaging.
* Help develop and deliver communication strategies that spotlight our three units: 8 Training Battalion REME, The REME Arms School, and No 4 School of Technical Training.
* Craft compelling content and build strong relationships across DSEME, the Defence College of Technical Training, and the wider Defence community.
* Contribute to corporate and internal communications, support policy updates, announcements, and crisis communications while maintaining consistency with MOD branding.
* Collaborate with the Mitie Communications Manager and unit teams on multi-channel campaigns to communicate the breadth and depth of training delivery.
* Monitor media coverage and sentiment; use insights to inform smart recommendations and identify high-impact opportunities to raise the profile of units and personnel.
* Support coordination of internal and external visits, including liaison with media, photographers, MT, and the Mess.
* Support other team members and contribute to a safe working environment.
Qualifications
* A natural storyteller with experience in PR, media relations, or communications who can create content that resonates.
* Strong writing skills, sound judgment, and the ability to navigate reputational risks with clarity and confidence.
* Proactive, hands-on, and able to thrive in a fast-paced environment with multiple projects.
* Experience in the Defence sector is a bonus; more importantly, you are driven by purpose, eager to make a positive impact, and ready to amplify the voice and reputation of the Defence School of Electronic and Mechanical Engineering.
