Summary
Some prescription medications can be addictive, leading to significant problems for people taking them or trying to reduce and/or stop use completely. This is an exciting pilot project in which Open Road aims to develop an effective service for people struggling with addiction to prescribed medication. The Prescribed Medication Intervention Worker will work closely with General Practitioners, Pharmacists, and local Pain Management Clinics to support individuals exploring their motivation to change their behaviour.
Responsibilities include encouraging, initiating, and sustaining recovery, facilitating 1:1 psychosocial interventions, and maintaining excellent relationships with partnership agencies. The worker will collaborate with GPs to develop joint care/reduction plans to meet clients' clinical and psychological needs related to their medication use.
A day in the life
The role involves working with patients in GP surgeries to reduce dependence on prescription medications with addictive properties. Building rapport with patients to work effectively on dose reduction, exploring withdrawal and dependency, and coordinating with doctors to prevent severe withdrawal symptoms are key aspects of the role.
