Specialist Pharmacist - Surgery and Critical Care - Pharmacy

Join to apply for the Specialist Pharmacist - Surgery and Critical Care - Pharmacy role at NHS Scotland

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is one of the largest healthcare systems in the UK employing around 40,000 staff in a wide range of clinical and non‑clinical professions. We deliver acute hospital, primary, community and mental health care services to a population of over 1.15 million and a wider population of 2.2 million when our regional and national services are included.

The shift pattern for this post is: Monday‑Friday 08:30–16:45, 37 hours per week including participation in weekend working.

Are you interested in a hospital pharmacy career in Glasgow & Clyde? Does the opportunity to train in a supportive environment with motivated pharmacists appeal to you? Would you like the opportunity to work in specialist clinics and wards with university links, where you can use and develop your pharmacy knowledge and skills?

We are currently seeking a motivated and experienced clinical pharmacist with excellent communication skills to join the Pre‑Operative pharmacy team in NHS GG&C. The role will include an in‑patient clinical position in the critical care team at Glasgow Royal Infirmary with potential future involvement in the surgical in‑patient clinical service. You will be part of a team helping to shape an award‑winning service aimed at improving outcomes for surgical patients across the health board. The Pre‑Operative pharmacy service operates a number of clinic‑based services in which you will participate, consulting directly with patients and working closely with surgical and anaesthetic colleagues. In critical care you will attend daily ward rounds, working closely with the multidisciplinary team. You will be an active member of the MDT participating in team meetings, research and quality improvement, support the development of technical staff and foundation pharmacists and trainees, and act as a source of information and prescribing support providing information on all aspects of drug use including patient safety and contributing to strategic plans for modern pharmacy services. Opportunities to advance your clinical practice in line with the Advanced Practice Curriculum are encouraged.

Glasgow Royal Infirmary is a busy teaching hospital situated in the North of Glasgow and has an excellent team of friendly pharmacy staff committed to modernisation of services and in particular ward‑based medicines management, pharmacist prescribing and e‑health initiatives.

You should have a Masters Degree in Pharmacy or equivalent and be registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council. You should have completed or be currently undertaking the NES Foundation Level Training or equivalent. Experience in a pre‑op setting, clinics or a critical care environment would be advantageous but not essential.

The working pattern will be Monday to Friday with participation in weekend, public holiday and on call shifts.

Informal contact: If you are interested in applying for this post or wish more information, please contact Pamela MacTavish, Lead Clinical Pharmacist (Surgery and Anaesthetics) on 0141 201 3233 or email pamela.mactavish2@nhs.scot or Kieran Fitzpatrick, lead for the Pre‑Operative pharmacy service kieran.fitzpatrick@nhs.scot.
