Job Purpose
To provide functional leadership and development of patient derived organoids and complex clinically relevant patient derived model systems as part of the Glasgow Tissue Research Facility. Develop and deliver the lab-based techniques and input to future research strategy and structure.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
* Take a leading role in the planning, development and management of all aspects of human model system service within the Glasgow Tissue Research Facility and conduct of assigned research individually or jointly in accordance with the project deliverables and project/group/School/College research strategy.
* Determine priorities and allocate resources to meet planned objectives and requirements.
* Demonstrate a degree of leadership by developing research questions relating to the development of in vitro human model systems, conducting independent research and generating original ideas by building upon existing concepts. Perform exemplar projects using the model systems developed.
* Have in-depth knowledge of developing human patient derived organoid, co-culture and explant systems, for exploitation in drug and biomarker development.
* Establish and maintain your research profile and reputation and that of the University of Glasgow/School/Research Group/area, including establishing and sustaining a track record of independent and joint publications of international quality, enhancing the research impact in terms of economic/societal benefit, and gathering indicators of esteem. Dissemination of data through academic outputs including publication in high impact peer reviewed journals.
* Presentation of work at international and national conferences, at internal and external seminars, colloquia and workshops to develop and enhance our research and/or impact profile.
* Make a leading contribution contribute to applications for research grants which incorporate use of patient-derived organoids established from different tumour types.
* Develop/improve the capability of staff and students within MVLS with an interest in using human model systems, motivating and mentoring staff and students to better meet the current and future requirements.
Engage in personal, professional and career development, to enhance both specialist and transferable skills in accordance with desired career trajectory. Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by Director of GTRF and Head of School of Cancer Sciences.
* Work collaboratively with others, including within the wider College/School/Group and where relevant with external contacts, to enhance the delivery of the research/teaching aims and support the broader strategic aims of the University

Knowledge/Qualifications, Skills and Experience
Essential
* A1 Normally Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12 (PhD) plus track record of emerging independence within a research/professional environment or alternatively possess professional qualifications and experience equivalent to PhD level plus the requisite experience.
* A2 A comprehensive knowledge of colorectal cancer research, including the use of human tissue and the generation of ex-vivo models (e.g., explants, Patient Derived Organoids).
* C1 Well-developed working knowledge of research methods, technical models, equipment and techniques relevant to the generation, maintenance and use of ex vivo models derived from human tissue to support scientific investigations.
* C2 Demonstrably excellent analytical and technical/scientific problem-solving capability.
* C3 Ability to communicate material of a specialist or highly technical nature and to be effective both orally and in writing at a level appropriate to the activity.
* C4 Demonstration of leadership and motivational skills in formal and informal situations
* C5 Extensive breadth and depth of knowledge in cancer research to develop teaching programmes/methodologies/learning support.
* C6 Continuing engagement with current practice and developing knowledge.
Experience
* E1 Experience of planning and progressing work activities within professional guidelines or organisational policy, applying initiative and independent judgement.
* E2 Developing track record of research outputs compatible with enhancing the School’s research profile in accordance with School objectives.
* E3 Experience of making distinct contributions to identifying and pursuing research funding (or equivalent business development) applications.
* E4 Experience of planning and progressing work activities within professional guidelines or organisational policy, applying initiative and independent judgement.
* E5 Proven commitment to supporting the career development of colleagues and to other forms of collegiality appropriate to the career stage, including some experience of research project supervision.
* E6 Effective organisation skills to manage time, prioritise and deliver appropriate research, teaching and administrative responsibilities.
* E7 Commitment to open research, as appropriate to the discipline, through open data, open code, open educational resources and practices that support replication.
Desirable
* F1 Proven ability to design review and enhance multiple learning, teaching and assessment programmes.

Terms and Conditions
Salary is Grade 7, £41,064 - £46,049 per annum. This position is full time and funded for up to 36 months, with the possibility of extension.
