Senior Specialist Dietitian – Cystic Fibrosis

We are looking for an experienced, motivated and active team player with excellent communication skills to join our adult cystic fibrosis team as a core and valued member. This will be full time, fixed term position for up to 12 months.

The cystic fibrosis team at St Bartholomew’s Hospital is a friendly and dynamic multidisciplinary team consisting of consultants, clinical nurse specialists, physiotherapists, dietitians, psychologists and a social worker and pharmacist. We work closely with a wide range of health and non-health professionals in both the hospital and the community. As a senior specialist dietitian you will also be a key member of the nutrition and dietetics team working alongside dietitians who cover a range of specialties including oncology, cardiac and respiratory medicine

Main duties of the job

§To provide regular individualised support, advice and education to in- and outpatients with CF, carers and clinicians.

§To develop expert knowledge and skills in the nutritional management of CF, including co morbidities such as CF diabetes, pancreatic exocrine insufficiency and liver disease.

§Working within the multidisciplinary team to continue developing a specialist dietetic team, participating in regular MDT and service development meetings locally.

§To ensure that audit and service evaluation are undertaken on a regular basis to ensure that practice is evidence based and reflects current research, guidelines and consensus views

Qualifications

Essential criteria

1. BSc Nutrition & Dietetics or relevant postgraduate qualification
2. HCPC registered dietitian

Desirable criteria

3. Post graduate certificate in non-medical prescribing
4. Post graduate research qualification
5. Member of the BDA CF specialist Group

Experience

Essential criteria

6. Experience in a relevant speciality e.g. nutrition support, cystic fibrosis, gastroenterology, pancreatic endocrine insufficiency or diabetes.
7. Understanding of team dynamics and experience of working within a multidisciplinary team. Able to maintain effective working relationships with relevant colleagues and stakeholders
8. Experience in taking part in project work, such as clinical audit, that supports improvement in service or supports a change in practice.
9. Experience of delivering undergraduate student supervision and clinical education. Confident to provide teaching to large groups.

Desirable criteria

10. Experience in working with other specialist Dietitians from other trusts to undertake service review/improvement
11. Experience in research
12. Experience of line management of staff including completing appraisals, 1:1 meetings and objective setting and able to work within Trust policy and support line reports to do
13. Experience in parenteral nutrition.

Knowledge

Essential criteria

14. In depth knowledge in relevant speciality e.g. Nutrition support, cystic Fibrosis, gastroenterology, pancreatic endocrine insufficiency or diabetes.
15. Actively undertakes appropriate continuing professional development (CPD) activities and supports team/line reports in this area

Skills

Essential criteria

16. Ability to work closely with other members of the MDT for example completing joint assessments/reviews.
17. Ability to supervise junior members of clinical staff
18. Excellent oral communication skills, including ability to demonstrate empathy, use behavioural change/ motivational interviewing techniques to facilitate change and to communication complex medical information into easily understandable language. Able to deal with distressed patients/carers.
19. Ability to problem solve, analyse complex clinical problems and create practical solutions to provide best clinical care.
20. Able to work with patients from a range of backgrounds including young adults and the understanding of their needs and priorities.
21. Able to reflect and appraise own performance. Understanding of the limitation of own knowledge and skills. Ability to identify learning needs and interests and make a plan to meet these.
22. Able to set priorities and meet deadlines in spite of repeated interruptions.
23. Basic ICT skills
