We are Gnosis Health, a Newcastle University spin-out emerging from world-leading research in digital health, clinical AI, and behavioural science.
Our flagship platform, MAXine, is an AI-powered companion designed to support people living with chronic disease. Not as a chatbot. Not as a gimmick. But as a clinically grounded, patient-centred system that helps individuals make sense of symptoms, treatment, and daily life over time.
MAXine sits at the intersection of clinical evidence, real-world patient behaviour, and applied AI that actually has to work in the real world.
The company was co-founded by Professor Edward Meinert, drawing on over a decade of research across Oxford, Imperial, Harvard, and the NHS. We are now moving from research into real-world deployment, building the core engineering team that will take MAXine from strong foundations to national and international scale.
You will be joining as one of the founding engineers. If you enjoy solving technically hard problems that actually matter to patients, you will fit in nicely.
About the Role
You will help build the backbone of MAXine: from the React Native mobile experience patients use daily, through to the cloud services and APIs that power clinical insight, AI workflows, and secure health data exchange.
This is a senior generalist role for someone who thrives on breadth. It is not a feature-factory position. You will be shaping a platform that must balance usability, safety, performance, and clinical credibility, all at once.
What You Will Do
* Build and maintain features across the React Native app and backend services.
* Design clean, scalable APIs supporting mobile workflows and future integrations.
* Implement secure data handling aligned with GDPR, NHS Digital standards, and medical software expectations.
* Work closely with clinicians, researchers, and product leads to translate messy real-world healthcare into clean technical solutions.
* Write code that is readable, testable, and built to survive first contact with reality.
* Participate in architectural discussions and help evolve how the platform is built, not just what is built.
* Debug across the stack, because healthcare systems never fail politely.
What We Are Looking For
* 4+ years of full-stack development experience.
* Strong React Native experience.
* Backend development using Node.js, Python, or similar.
* Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP).
* Comfort working with PostgreSQL and modern data models.
* CI/CD familiarity and a healthy respect for testing, including unit, integration, and regression tests.
* Clear communication and the ability to think beyond your own code.
Nice to Have
* Digital health or regulated software experience.
* HL7 FHIR familiarity.
* Experience integrating AI or decision-support systems.
* TypeScript and modern state management experience.
