LEAD ROTARY DRILLER
Location: Leeds
Salary: Competitive
Contract Type: Permanent
Working Hours: 40 hours per week, Monday-Friday
At Ground Control Geotechnical Solutions (GCGS), we deliver high-quality, sustainable geotechnical solutions that support major infrastructure projects. We’re looking for an experienced Lead Rotary Drilling Operative to lead safe, efficient, and high-quality drilling operations on site.
What you’ll do
1. Operate and maintain rotary drilling rigs for ground investigations
2. Lead and supervise on-site drilling teams
3. Prepare sites, carry out open-hole, core, and rock coring works
4. Ensure accurate sampling, logging, and data recording
5. Maintain equipment and report maintenance issues
6. Act as the on-site representative, providing progress updates to management
Key responsibilities
7. Deliver drilling works safely, on time, and to specification
8. Allocate daily tasks and mentor less experienced operatives
9. Ensure full compliance with HSE, CDM, and RAMS requirements
10. Lead toolbox talks and site safety briefings
11. Maintain high standards of quality, professionalism, and client satisfaction
What we’re looking for
Essential
12. Proven experience in rotary drilling and ground investigations
13. Strong knowledge of drilling techniques and geotechnical sampling
14. Experience supervising site teams
15. Good understanding of HSE and site safety requirements
16. Experience working on infrastructure or construction projects
Desirable
17. NVQ Level 2 or 3 in Land Drilling (or equivalent)
18. First Aid or emergency response training
19. Experience using digital logging or site data tools
