Locum Consultant Surgeon in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at Homerton Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. The closing date is 11 September 2026
This post has been created to support and develop the OMFS service at Homerton Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, in line with the needs of the department. This will be renewable contract up to 12 months in total. The opportunity to proceed to Substantive Consultant is available, with funding secured. The successful candidate will be working as an OMFS Consultant in OMFS at Homerton Healthcare, in a primarily elective setting, with support to develop their areas of subspecialty interest. The successful candidate will have regular outpatient and theatre sessions at Homerton Healthcare. The consultant will also be responsible for teaching Staff Grades and other junior staff, as well as contributing to the department teaching, audit and research programmes at Homerton Healthcare.
Main duties of the job
o Consultants will have a continuing responsibility for the care of patients in their charge and for the proper functioning of their departments. o Consultants will undertake administrative duties associated with the care of their patients and the running of their clinics or department. All Consultants are expected to assume responsibility both singly and corporately for the management of the Junior Medical Staff. In particular, they are expected to be responsible for approving and monitoring junior staff rotas and junior staff locum arrangements, where appropriate. o The successful applicant will be expected to participate fully in the medical audit arrangements in the District. o Consultants are also expected to concern themselves with the professional development of their trainees. o All Consultants have a responsibility to contribute to the teaching and assessment of undergraduates and of junior doctors. o Consultants are expected to continue with all aspects of professional development to allow successful appraisal and revalidation.

Homerton Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is an integrated care trust which provides hospital and community health services for Hackney, the city and surrounding communities. The Trust provides a full range of adult, older people\'s and children\'s services across medical and surgical specialties.
The trust operates acute services from a single site: Homerton University Hospital, which opened in 1986. Based on an aggregation of ratings across all of the core services provided from the hospital, the hospital has been rated by Care Quality Commission as \'Outstanding\'. The hospital has almost 500 beds spread across 11 wards, a ten-bed intensive care unit and maternity, paediatric and neonatal wards. Community services are provided by staff working out of 75 partner sites in Hackney and the City of London. The trust has a separate registration to provide continuing health care at the Mary Seacole Nursing Home.The hospital has three day-surgery theatres and six main operating theatres for all types of general surgery, trauma and orthopedics, gynecology, maxillo-facial, urology, ENT, obesity, bariatrics and obstetrics. We also have a surgical treatment room within the main theatres complex.

Person Specification
QUALIFICATIONS
* FRCS (OMFS) or equivalent
* MFDS or equivalent Higher degree - BSc MS MD PhD or equivalent
REGISTRATION
* Registered on GMC specialist register or within 6 months of obtaining it at the time of the interview
SPECIALTY
* Subspecialist training in OMFS, in an area of interest suitable to the future development of the department
* Broad based general professional training in general medicine
TRAINING AND TEACHING
* Experience of teaching and training undergraduates, postgraduates and junior medical staff
* Training the Trainers Course or equivalent
* Teaching and Assessment in Practice Course or equivalent
MANAGEMENT AND AUDIT
* Understanding the principles of clinical governance and its implications
* Ability to work as an effective member of a multidisciplinary team
* Understanding and experience of audit
* Evidence of service audit, design or change management
RESEARCH AND PUBLICATIONS
* Knowledge of research methodology
* Evidence of ongoing interest and achievement in research
* Training in research methodology.
* Publications in peer review journals
* Presentations to learned societies
PERSONAL SKILLS
* Communication. Ability to communicate with clarity and intelligently in written and spoken English.
