Bridge Inspector
Are you experienced at inspecting, assessing, or delivering bridge and structure projects? If so, the Bridge Maintenance Team is looking for a new Bridge Inspector to join us.
Role Overview:
As a Bridge Inspector, you will ensure that programmed, non-programmed, and emergency inspections of bridges and structures across Devon are carried out efficiently. You will also prepare reports and estimates of maintenance works, issue works orders and carry out any supervision. You will also assist the Bridge Maintenance teams with the inspection, design and supervision of structural maintenance works. Additionally, you will carry out confined space inspections, safety assessments of structural damage and participate in the out-of-hours emergency standby.

Team and Collaboration:
You will be part of the Engineering Design Group (EDG), a department of over 100 passionate Engineers, Technicians, and Inspectors dedicated to delivering high-quality infrastructure projects. You will work in a team of approximately six people, supported by a Principal Engineer, and collaborate with colleagues from Environment, Highway & Traffic Management, Planning, and other fields.
Projects:
EDG work on a diverse range of projects, including:
1. Inspection, maintenance, and replacement of existing infrastructure assets
2. New bridges and structures on cycle trails, recycling centres, urban link roads, and flood risk projects
3. Larger projects such as:
4. North Devon Link Road improvement project (£46m)
5. A382 MRN project in Newton Abbot (£44m)
6. Sweet Violet Bridge and link in Dawlish
Commitment to Sustainability:
Devon County Council declared a climate emergency in 2019. Since then, decarbonisation has been a priority in our construction and maintenance efforts. In 2022, we secured in Live Labs funding to trial innovations aimed at decarbonising highway infrastructure. This project is set to transform our approach to designing and delivering highway projects, and we are excited to meet this challenge.

Where will I be based?
Hybrid working is available to all. Our main office is in Exeter and this post will mainly cover Dawlish, Exeter, Exmouth, Moretonhampstead, Newton Abbot and Teignmouth. However the out of hours call outs, Inspections and engineering projects can be based across Devon.
What do I need to apply?
HNC in Civil or Structural Engineering or equivalent and have relevant work experience. The successful applicant will be required to pass a recognised Bridge competency assessment and be confident in the water. Working towards Incorporated status is desirable.
