This post offers the opportunity for a committed and ambitious stroke physician to join the NHS Lanarkshire stroke service. It is an NHS Lanarkshire-wide role but will be based at University Hospital Wishaw. Future changes depend on an exciting redesign of stroke services in NHS Lanarkshire with the potential for some concentration of stroke services.
The successful candidate will be a stroke physician but may have a background in Medicine for Older Adults, Acute Medicine, Clinical Pharmacology or Neurology. Sessional time for these other interests can be included in the job plan.
Responsibilities
Acute stroke services are provided on all three acute Lanarkshire hospital sites. These include hyperacute stroke thrombolysis delivery and thrombectomy assessment, Fast Track TIA clinics and acute assessment / rehabilitation for stroke in a dedicated ward. There is immediate access to CT/CTA and CTP as needed. There are 24 integrated stroke beds within University Hospital Wishaw, including input from a stroke specific multidisciplinary team. The regional vascular and Lanarkshire interventional radiology services are based on the University Hospital Hairmyres site.
A pan-Lanarkshire Stroke Tone Management Clinic runs weekly and involves three stroke consultants and two specialist stroke physiotherapists. We have PFO and lipid management stroke clinics and have comprehensive community follow up with our Stroke Liaison Nurse team and neuro-rehab teams.
The NHS Lanarkshire Stroke Service has recently been awarded University Department Status and is currently recruiting to multiple multi-centre and local research trials. There are three dedicated stroke clinical research nurse. As well CTIMPS we run a number of stroke rehabilitation trials especially relating to the Technology Enriched Rehabilitation Hub in the University Hospital Wishaw Stroke Unit and a similar community Hub in Blantyre LIFE.
Context
Lanarkshire is home to around 700,000 people and has plenty to offer for everyone. If you wish to relocate to Lanarkshire there is a wide range of interesting towns or rural locations, all close to the attractions of two major cities, Glasgow and Edinburgh. With an excellent public transport network, travelling to and from Lanarkshire is an easy commute via road and rail links, with Glasgow about 30 minutes away and around 40 minutes to Edinburgh.
Lanarkshire has large urban populations with many rural communities each holding a different outlook on life which presents diverse living. Lanarkshire is divided into two separate council areas; North Lanarkshire Council and South Lanarkshire Council.
Other information
Proposals for additional SPA time from applicants are encouraged. In addition to the 1 PA for Non-DCC/SPA activities, the Board is supportive of applications for additional SPA time from individuals with well-developed ideas for improving services who are able to demonstrate a commitment to quality improvement, patient safety (including human factors training), Medical Education, Research & Development, acting as an Appraiser, etc. Applicants who are able to demonstrate a commitment to any of the above or other areas and wishing to commence on more than 1 PA for SPA duties should discuss proposals with the identified Recruitment Lead and/or Service Manager who will consider the request in line with the successful candidate’s professional and service requirements.
