Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly organized, motivated and enthusiastic Band 5 Pharmacy Technician Higher Level to join the Inpatient Pharmacy team at SJUH (St James Hospital) at Leeds Teaching Hospitals.

We are looking for somebody who is experienced and confident to work independently and as part of a team, with excellent communication and time management skills and be able to demonstrate a high level of attention to detail as well as remaining calm at busy times, being pro-active and able to make decisions and solve problems.

This post will involve working with the other technicians to co-ordinate the workload and supervise the staff.

This post is full time = 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday 9-5.30pm with 1 hour lunch.


Main duties of the job

Supporting the Specialist Technician in the day to day running of the dispensary and supervision of staff.

Labelling, Dispensing and Accuracy Checking medicines for inpatients and discharges following standard operating procedures

Ordering and stock maintenance for the dispensary

Dealing with queries and problems from patients and service users.

Reviewing training plans with new staff and providing feedback.

Working with the ward support teams to order medicines in a timely manner

Job responsibilities

Working as a registered Pharmacy Technician the post holder will contribute to the efficient delivery of the Pharmaceutical Service to patients, wards and departments both within the Trust and to other healthcare organisations. This will involve participating in the evening, weekend and Bank Holiday rotas.

Maintain professional and courteous working relationships with staff and respect the equality and diversity of each and every person they come into contact within the course of their business.

Responsible for the training and supervision of Pharmacy Technicians, Pre-Registration Trainee Technicians and Pharmacy Support Workers, ensuring all staff in the service area are kept up to date and informed of any changes in working practice.

Support the line management of a team and be responsible for attendance management, annual leave planning, 1-1s and appraisals.

Deputise for the Specialist Technicians (Band 6) in their absence.

As a registrant of the General Pharmaceutical Council the postholder will act with a level of autonomy in their day to day practice

Dispense and issue medicines to patients, wards, theatres and all other internal and external service users

To dispense controlled drugs and ensure that all legally required records are accurate and up to date

Liaise with Procurement staff about urgently required medicines, and informing patients and other health care staff about supply problems / delays

Answer queries from nurses and other healthcare professional, within limit of authority referring where required.

Prioritise workload and analyse situations to resolve problems, within limits of own authority

Dispense specialist hospital-only, clinical trial medicines and unlicensed medicines which require accurate, detailed records and support research activity.

Comply with Trust and departmental procedures relating to Health and Safety and Clinical waste management.
